I went to the dentist with pain in my back molars, upper and lower for several months. He finally told me I needed two root canals. One upper and one lower. I continued to have pain in both teet for 4-6 weeks after the prcedure. I went back and he said my teeth needed to be ground down. He did that and there seem to be some relief but within a day the pain was back. I went back and he did another xray and after mouning and groaning over the pictures he announced there was another root in my upper and a possible hairline fracture in the lower. He had me come back and did another root canal on the upper molar and he charged me for anothe root canal. My lower molar seemed better so he suggested we leave it alone.
Do you think I should have to pay for the additional root canal? or the Hairline fracture? Shouldn't these things have shown up on the first Xrays and did he cause the Frature during that root canal? How do I know? Is this the practice of a good dentist?
I feel scammed.

I go to the Dentist every 3-6 months for cleanings and check-ups. I must add that I have TMJ and at first was told it was a TMJ problem, not dental by a Physician. So after all the pain meds and no relief I went to my Dentist to have him check it out too.
Thanks everyone for your help. I will leave this open for comments:

Go with Toxavit (Love the name!) and Dr. Tom.
There is actually an additional code for teeth with four canals and it is common to have a higher fee for those beasts. I could see if the dentist wanted to charge you the additional amount, but I would not agree with charging a whole new fee. If you were in my office and this happened to you, I think I'd probably put my tail between my legs and do the 4th canal without making any additional charge. I'd figure you already paid in pain and suffering. As far as the possible crack, that would not usually show (per se) on an x-ray. They are very difficult to see, even when you have the tooth wide open. I've been using magnification for over five years now and I've seen enough root fractures to believe that I must have missed a few before I could see things this well. It happens... SO far, though, it sounds as if he is only speculating. Wait and see until the upper is all taken care of and the pain resolves.

Except for Toxavit's answer, disregard what all the (obvious) non-professionals offered as advice, OK?
There are always numerous variables in health care. It is an art as well as a science. We like pat answers because they are convenient and because we all are guilty of wanting immediate gratification. Yes, sometimes RCTs require re-treatment. Yes, sometimes we miss hairline fractures. No, he probably did not cause the fracture. In my practice, I would not charge a patient to redo a procedure unless it was more involved than just re-treating, i.e., another root canal was found and it would have been an extra charge to treat it originally. I don't think he is taking advantage of you, he did suggest not doing anything further on the lower one. If you still have doubts, ask to be referred to a specialist, or look one up in your phone book under Dentists-Endodontists. Hope this helps.

The kind of person who thinks people should keep their teeth nice and beautiful. Say you got a severe tooth decay that made it to your pulp, if the dentist doesn't stick needles in your gum, drill through whatever enamel you have left, scrape your root and suck out saliva so bacteria doesn't go in , to try to save your tooth and put a crown on it, then you'll just get that tooth extracted by a general practitioner. Same to any other tooth that has decay on it. Then your teeth will shift and move and you'll basically look ugly. And for toothaches being 2nd worst pain, try dry socket!

sometimes even a good dentist is at the end of his wisdom. he tries to help, but not every tooth and person is the same. sometimes it takes longer sometimes it goes faster. it is not his guilt, that your tooth has an additional root canal. this happens not very often but it can occur. and why should your dentist work for free, you can´t walk into the supermarket and get things for free, can you? it´s not his fault or mistake!
besides that: you should not go to the dentist when your teeth hurt, go every half year and the bill isn´t that big!

No, you should not have to pay for his mistakes. Before I would have done all of those root canals I would have got them pulled out.

i think you should get a second opinion. i work in the dental field and something sounds fishy. if you live near a college that has a dental school, i would go there because they are very thorough and inexpensive!

Where did you get this done? Uzbekistan or maybe Russia?
Go to another dentist and take your x-rays (full sets) with you!
