went hiking with my 2 dogs today. afterwards found many small bugs crawling on their fur. Bathed them and washed away 75% of them but found some had burrowed into the skin around hair follicles. What are they? How do you treat them? Small, brownish, very smal like pepper on a plate. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like your dogs have ticks. You do not say what area of the country you are from, but they are very common in most wooded areas. You should check your own body all over, too, as there are several tick-borne diseases which aren't a lot of fun to have. They usually have to on you for 24-hours for the diseases to be spread.

As for treating your dogs... trying using a flea/tick dip with pyrethrins in it for immediate results. Contact your local vet for best advice.

If you are planning future hikes, you may want to have your dogs vaccinated against Lyme disease...a common tick-borne virus. Also, using Frontline Plus would be a big help in preventing fleas and ticks in the future.

Are they hard? Do they stick their heads inside of the dogs skin? If so they may be ticks. There are a few ways you can get rid of them, you can take a match and light it, blow it out, then touch them on the butt real quick. They will usually pull out. Another way that we have always used is a very strong nail polish. If you draw a circle around the bug, they cant handle the fumes. They will pull out and try and run. But if they pull out, you have to grab them very very fast with tissue or they will re-enter the skin. DO NOT pull them out yourself!!! The heads will detach from the body, and that is not good. Make sure you kill them by burning them or flushing them down the toilet. They will enter your skin as well. Now I am not sure if these are ticks, but if not then you should take the pets to a vet.

ticks
carry various diseases
get some tick removal shampoo and use it.
or dust with sulphur powder since DDt is off the market

Better check yourself. Ticks carry lyme disease that will screw up a human nervous system and make you a cripple case. Ticks are so small that you almost never see them. Check yourself or get some one to do it for you. They will get in your pubic areas in your ears and hair under the arms, and spot that may be moist.

RUN TO YOUR VET AND GET TICKS SHAMPOOS AND TREATMENTS!!!

I lost 1 dogs to Erhlichiosis, a deadly tick born disease and you need to address this ASAP. WE did not even know he had been bitten. 1 bite from an infected tick is all it takes. If you like going outdoors with your dog, Keep him on Flea and Ticks medication like Advantix or Frontline. Better safe than sorry!

They sound like seed ticks, very small. You need to give them a flea/tick bath to kill them and check yourself to make certain that you don't have any on you!

seed ticks? fleas?

Get frontline or advantage. Also you can try flee and tick shampoo. But make sure not to use that ALL the time, it can dry out the skin.
