I'm planning an overnight stay in Arlington Virginia. However, I have a young child and I don't think I can walk it all....so I am hoping to find a parking garage/place near everything so we don't have to walk a long ways away. There is the metro....but I don't know about that much...and I've never been on it.

Here's an interactive metro map. http://www.stationmasters.com/System_Map/system_map.html
You can click on the areas in Arlington until you find the one closest to you since I don't know where you'll be staying.
Here's the area around the mall
http://www.stationmasters.com/System_Map/SMITHSON/smithson.html
You can use it to decide which exit at the Smithsonian station to get off at.
I hope this helps. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE do you want to try driving and parking in the city.

There are lots of free parking spaces around the mall but you have to either get there early or be very lucky to get those. The Reagan Office Building has a parking garage that most people don't seem to know about. You do have to put up with the whole showing ID/having them go over your car and junk but it is do-able.
You may also want to consider just taking the Metro in from Arlington. Use the Union Station stop (at the Capitol Building end of things) or the Smithsonian stop will drop you right in the middle of the Mall. I don't know where in Arlington you're starting so I can't be more specific at that end. The link below can help you with the Metro.

The metro is REALLY easy from Arlington. I don't know where in Arlington you are but you can take the metro and get off right near the National Mall. TRUST ME, save yourself the trouble. Driving and parking in DC can be a nightmare. The people at the metro station are very helpful and if I remember correctly I believe it is the Blue Line from Arlington that you want it will save you from having to transfer.....but it has been awhile since I have been there.

When I visited Washington,D.C. I used a park and ride near the subway system in Bethesda ,MD. and used the subway system which took me right to the mall area.
This is probably the easiest way to get to the mall. Triple A ,if you are a member, they have information for the D.C. area.
There are also tourist buses once you are in the mall area.
Hope that helps..Yes walking the mall area is strenuous and tiring especially with a child.
Have a nice trip .

Ok... Take Constitution Avenue (going from the Capitol to the Lincoln), after passing the Obelisc or Washington Monument and white house, make a right in those streets, if u dont find a place look in the parallel street to constitution.. You will find a park no more than 2 blocks from the mall, and then... WALK... If u go after 7 or weekend, don't worry aout time..

Good luck

I have always parked at the "ELIPSE" parking circle. It is adjacent from the washington monument. It is just walking distance to the national mall. You can look at a map and find it.
