Yes and what branch does not matter. You will learn more about yourself that 3 life times. You will be amazed at the true capabilities that you have. You will learn about others, you will experience things that you could never experience in civilian life, you will get an occupational specialty that may continue in civilian life. You will mature, develop, and have self-esteem.

I love the military, Glad i joined. But the kids going threw now really lack the discipline tho. Dont know why. Boot is getting easier i guess. I think everyone should join, yeah it suckes when you are a low rank, sweep, swab, clean, clean, polish... but once you get E-4/E-5 (depends on what service) it rocks, E-5 is the best rank in the military i think. I do not do field days any more, I dont paint anymore, I get to yell A LOT! (only because my booters are morons) But if you show that you are willing to do 100% all the time and never give up, a good leader will see that and not make you do the really crappy jobs. If you are one of these yeah, wat ya going ta do bout it pops guys, Do not join, cause i will slap the sheit out of you! If you are squared away, hell yeah join! Best time of my life.

E-5 in 5 years, E-4 in 2 years. Been E-5 for almost 11 months now.

I was in the military and I would not talk anyone in or out of joining. I would tell anyone considering that the military has changed and there is no way you can stay in anymore without deploying for months at a time very often. If you have kids or plan to start a family you need to realize this and ask yourself if you are o.k. with this.
Second you need to go directly to a base of which ever branch you want to join and talk to people who already do the job you want to do WITHOUR YOUR RECRUITER!!! Don't let your recruiter tell you this can't be done. All you have to do is call the base and ask to speak to that job. Don't let the base operator transfer you to a recruiter on base.

NEVER GO IN THE MILITARY WITHOUT A JOB LINED UP!!!!!
If the job is not what you expected or want to do don't sign up for the job. Don't let your recruiter tell you that it is too late for another job or that you can't get another one because that is not true! AND DON"T LET YOUR RECRUITER TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN CHANGE JOBS IN BASIC OR THE SCHOOL YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN YOUR JOB THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!!

The branch to choose depends on you.
If you want to travel and don't mind living in tight quarters on a boat must of the time and you want a job where you will learn the most go into the Navy.
If you want a job that is most like the civilian life and how you live is important to you then join the Air Force.
If you want to go to war and shooting guns is your thing and you can get along with people who aren't the most intelligent then go into the Army.
If you want to go to war, want a real challenge, and be part of a very close knit group join the Marines.

Don't go to the different recruiters and decide by which one has the best to offer and says the best thing. They can all offer you the same things and the same jobs. You just have to consider what is important to you by the points I mentioned above. Hint: the branch who needs the most people will recruit the hardest!

Since I don't know you I can't recommend one service over the other. Do keep in mind that once you enter basic training there is no turning back until your contract is up. You can't decide one day that you don't want to do it any more because they are going to tell you too bad. It is a commitment that you HAVE to honor!
You have up until the time you leave for basic training to change your mind and that is it! Not let a recruiter tell you otherwise.

Speak to people who are already in for pointers and advise. Speak to people of different ranks and listen carefully and don't just listen for what you want to hear.

Honestly - no. I spent nearly 6 years in the service under both the Carter and Reagan administrations. It was honorable back then. I learned a trade and got out and got a good job making 6 figures.

Now we are fighting political wars. We have nothing to gain, everything to lose. When your CIC and staff have never felt the pain of war, they have nothing to lose. When the military has a real mission, I would join. Now the mission is to protect GW's lies and innuendos.

If you must join - join the Coast Guard. At least you will be able to take care of business stateside instead of some hell hole who could care less about us like the middle east.

I really enjoy the military. There are lots of great benefits, and you get to do lots of cool things. However, you also have to put up with lots of other things. You spend lots of time away from home, you train constantly, you can't always express your opinions. Remember, in most jobs if you don't agree with your boss you have the option of quiting or telling them off. Yeah, you might get fired, but at least you made yourself heard. In the military you can not quit, and if you try to "tell" your boss off, you might find yourself in the brig or at a Captain's Mast. So if you're the kind of person who doesn't take orders well, or can't control your temper, then it is probably not for you. Military life is not for everyone, but I think it is great.

Can you qualify, in your mind, to be a General officer? Then they want you.

Otherwise, for a youngster it's a good place to learn some responsible habits for a couple years among some fine people.

There is also a good deal of chicken sxxt here and there, as in any large operation. If you do go in, follow the achievers, not the "cool" goldbricks.

Years later, you'll remember the good stuff and laugh at the used chickenfeed.

There are some excellent benefits to joining the military. The pride that comes from serving your country, training in various fields of study, education (G.I. Bill), food, housing, travel, learning discipline and honor, medical, dental, and retirement benefits. Plus, military service looks damn good on a resume.

Only if the person joining understands that they become government property and are expendable. Soldiers have a job, defend and make war and every soldier, no matter what their MOS is, is part of that job.

There are too many people who go in thinking that there is no way a war will happen and when one does, they react with surprise that they could possibly die.

As a former member of the USN, I'd recommend joining. Any of the branches will teach discipline, responsibility, respect, and the ability to push your limits to new heights. You'll learn that you *can* do a lot of things you thought you never could.
