Tigerdirect.com has laptops for 400 or so, check out Dell.com and go by a SuperTarget to Super Walmart. I would say plan on spending 400 to 600 bucks. You may want to check with your local school district in regards to programs to assist in computer purchases. IF you child is old enough to work a part time job perhaps you can offer to match whatever they earn and then ask family and friends to match a portion as well. Hold a garage sale, look on ebay.com.

Its great you want to get them a laptop, but for $300 or so you can a desktop, saves you the extra 200 or 300 bucks.
