you have to renew it before it expires otherwise you will get pulled over and get a ticket for an expired license plate

If your "tabs" expire at the end of May, then you would have until the 14 day of June(2 weeks after plate sticker expires) this is in Minnesota, may differ in other states.

I imagine it varies from state to state. I have my husband's renewal in my hot little hands (California) and if you don't renew by expiration date, you're charged a late fee according to when you finally get to paying (1-2 wks, 2 weeks to 1 month, 1 month to 3 months, 3 month plus)

I would say less than 30 days because you can be pulled over by police and highway patrol seeing you have expired license plate. Then you are in trouble.

The tags expire at the very beginning of the day not at the end of the month or the end of the day.

Usually, its the date of issue off your previous tags. But sometimes you can stretch till the end of that month. Depends on what mood the cop is in.
