Apparantly the testing is ridiculusly expensive, even with insurance. My Dr. has perscribed me Restoril which is a heavy sleep aid. It does put me to sleep, but I wake up within a few hours after it wares off. I generally get about 3-4 hrs. of sleep a night. I am so tired I feel like crying all the time and I constantly feel sick. Does anyone have any ideas until I can afford the Apnea testing. (please don't suggest nasal strips, they do not work). Help Me.

Do you snore? Sleep apnea is a specific diagnosis that involves
an interupted rythem of breathing I think. If I remember correctly
its a regular kind of breathing interrupted by moments of long
pauses, and then sudden gasps of air.Its very scary to hear some
one with this condition gasp for breath. If you don't have a partner
you sleep with that can hear you,try tape recording or videotaping
yourself asleep. There are a number of sleep disorders and of
course you should have a complete work up to rule out any
physical causes. You'll want to narrow down exactly when
you started not sleeping, and keep a diary of bed times, wake
times.Did any severe emotional event coincide with the insomnia?Keep in mind that sleeping pills only treat the symptons
and don't address the underlying cause.Sleeping pills should
only be used as a temporary means untill a proper diagnosis
and treatment can be administered.Good luck to you.

I have apnea, what you're describing sounds like something else. People with apnea, need no sleep aide.

I wake up 95 times an hour, but don't know it. Everyone that snores has a certain degree of apnea.
we stop breathing, but don't consciously wake up. I now sleep with a machine. It's easier to breathe and I feel more refreshed in the morning but I don't notice the difference other than , I dream more. Your inablity to sleep is something else

I thought sleep apnea means you stop breathing while sleeping..seems to me Airway, Breathing and Circulation should be at the top of the list for ol Doc! Regardless of whether one has insurance they cannot be turned away from treatment when it is a life threatening situation. This sounds like a potential life threatening situation to me. Get a lawyer to help you get the treatment you need. There are lawyers out there who don't charge until afterwards. If you have to sue ol doc or the hospital to get the treatment they will have to pay for mal-practice and there is your money right there.

This says don't sleep on your back, SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE for CRAP that is what it is called. Seriously..says it is a face mask and pump that you wear at night. It forces air into you while you sleep.

Good luck to you!

request a different sleep aide, restoril is very habit forming and only works for 3 to 4 hours, sounds like you have insomnia you need to take ambien or lunesta it is time released and will allow you at least 8 hours of rest

The symptoms you describe sound like insomnia, not sleep apnea. My advice would be to contact at least one more doctor,as it sounds like your's is ineptif he did not refer you to a sleep specialist.
