I always find wax easiest to work with and if you get a good wax, you can't tell its there. I always use the VO5 wax, so that might be worth a try.

get molding paste or pomade. You could get it a drugstores and target. B&B makes some. So does Dove, Garnier, Crew and a bunch of other people. Try to stay away from oily pomades (like triple flower) because it makes your hair look greasy.
Try going to a salon or a beuty supply store so you could see the texture. You want something that looks like conditioner or like paste.

Mousse works well for the tousled hair look. It doesn't hold as well as gel for thick or longer hair, but it looks more natural.

Try a flexible hair spray (aerosol) with mousse while it's still wet.
Also, you can try a shine/grease to it.
Gel can be too heavy and wet, in my opinion.

Try just a little hair conditioner. Any kind. Start with a small amount and increase if you want more. It will help your hair also.

I'm really serious go get your haircut by chinese, japanese or korean people. they really really knwo how to cut it much better, and it gives you a messy look, but they thin out your hair and layer it so that it always looks good. I'm white I always go to the asians for haircare. they're the best dude.
