Because it's a short step from "We are saved" to "The unsaved deserve everything they get" and from there barely a hop to "kill the unbelievers." Religious wars are about two things: Religious conviction on the part of the rank and file, and power and glory for the leaders. The Nazis were motivated by just as much religious zeal to do what they did as the Inquisitors and the Crusaders and Witch-Hunters were.

As for the idiot who claimed "There are no atheists in foxholes", I came under fire in the first Gulf war. I was an athiest then, I was an atheist when I was ducking bullets and shells, and I'm an atheist now. People who believe that drivel might want to try serving with an atheist and get an up close look at reality.

There are aspects of religion that preach love and others that preach hate. Either way it is a form of control over the wildness of man as an animal and usually the subjugation of women. It started as an explanation for the things we did not understand and a way for us to feel like we have control over the environment, i.e. if we do this than it will protect us from that. As time went on it was realized that it so much power it could be used to control people as well as the environment.
While preaching something that fundamentally seemed true like love it stuck in some rules and regulations and put the select in charge of them. It is all about power, religion kills because it is used to gain power, and have we not all also heard "fight the power?"

there is and old saying "There are no Atheists in fox holes"
Everyone believes that he is going to heaven when he dies.
Everyone believes that his cause is a just one or he wouldn't be out there fighting.
that is really hard to co respond with the fact that the earth was destroyed by a flood in Noah's day. Because the earth was full of violence because of them. God stated he regretted making men in the first place because they were so violent.
That tells me he doesn't fight for anyone.
They said, If you get rid of religion you get rid of war?
Few people would go to war and fight if they knew this life was all there is. Religious leaders to sanction war tell the troops on both sides that god is on our side and you go straight to heaven.
Muslims even get a bunch of Virgins. That will send them into battle. A German man wrote an article that he was a good Christian and felt he was fighting for God and the motherland.
They slaughtered millions of Innocent people and done it all in the name of religion.

I thank God that you are spiritual and not religious because these are two words with different big meanings. Religion kill because it is led by people who are in search of God if I can say it like that. There is no fear of God in them and so they kill, even though they claim to know God.

It is because there is a dichotomy between one's own logic and one's faith. These two things are at conflict with one another. For instance, it is not logical to think that a God would create us, then wipe us out in a flood. It is not logical for God to kill innocent first born babies. Yet they believe that it is true. This dichotomy causes internal conflict that drives them crazy. So crazy that they will kill others that don't believe as they do.

It relies upon on the denomination. i became into raised with the thought each and one and all people are imperfect and are going to make blunders, yet that we are all helpful and truly good. i became into additionally taught that God wasn't like a cosmic restoration-it-all. I even have continuously seen God as a stoic. i do no longer think of we are the reason for each and all of the tornadoes and organic failures that ensue. this is nature. So i assume it relies upon on how the guy has been raised.

For the same reason that countries go to war: power. There are people in every religion that would like their religion to be known as the one true religion, so they'll do what they feel they have to in order to destroy other religions.

And as a side note - more people have died in the name of God, then in the name of Satan... interesting, huh?

Religion is all about killing and torture.
God smote people with fire and brimstone. God turned Lots wife into a pillar of salt just for looking back at his murderous rampage. Jesus sends millions of people to burn in the fires of Hell.
Christians worship murderous torturers

Because it is inherently totalitarian. It uses vague language that its leaders can use to sway their followers. Because religions really are based on nothing, they have to constantly ward against other systems of belief. They demonize others who believe differently. This often makes them come to blows with other religions who likewise demonize them. And the killing ensues...
