my dog needs to be groomed really bad but we took him to a grooming place and he almost had a heartattack cause he's old!

i used to groom dogs, and many of them had been coming to our shop for a long time, and were getting old. the best thing you can do, is do everything you can not to cause further stress for the dog. if its just a bath that it needs, you can do it at home, if its possible. of course it depends on what kind of dog it is. the bigger the dog, the harder it is to bathe in a tub at home. if its not a dog you're able to do this with, and you need to take it to the groomer for the bath, request to stay with your dog and help bathe it to keep it calm. due the dog being old, DO NOT GIVE IT A SEDATIVE to keep it clam. this can easily cause problems for the dog. it will slow the heart rate and cause problems, esp. if the dog struggles. if the dog needs to be groomed further, such as a haircut, make sure the groomer works slowly with the dog and doesnt rush it. you may have to take it back to back to get a full groom. often with older dogs, we would only do so much at a time, to make sure the dog wasnt stressed out. it gives it time to adjust, and time to relax in between appts. if none of these options help, you could also check your local telephone book for a groomer that does in home appts, and that may help your dog just being in a more familiar environment.

What kind of dog is this? Why can't you groom him at home? How do you know he almost had a heart attack? Isn't he used to being groomed if he's old.
Maybe there's a mobile grooming service where you live - they'll come to you. If not, call a groomer, explain your dog is old, a good groomer will take extra care with older dogs.

If it is a breed that you can bathe yourself, do it yourself. If it is a breed that is hard to groom, and you need a groomer to do this, talk to your vet about something to relax him, and ask the groomer if you can stay with him to help relax him. Good luck.

your dog should have been used to being groomed or you should have taken better care of him so he didnt need grooming so bad
