I overheard someone in a pub say "You can't say brainstorming any more because..." Then it got noisy. As a reserved english person I didn't feel I could approach the person to ask, so I've adopted the less personal IT method. I know I shouldn't eavesdrop!

Eavesdrop. I do it all the time, it's amazing what you can learn. I was doing a counselling course when I found out about "brainstorming." Apparently it can be offensive to anybody with learning difficulties. The correct term is now "thought showering" or "shower. I think the world's gone mad.

My God - the P C merchants have really gone over the top this time if you can't say it because it might upset people with epilepsy - but more to the point, whenever I've been "invited" to a brain-storming meeting at work, I always announce my entrance by saying loudly enough so that absolutely every one present can hear me : "Is this where the brain-WASHING meeting is?" - and most of the bosses there are so thick that that they don't even realise what I've said! It speaks volumes doesn't it ! ! !

It is one of those words that has the PC brigade up in arms. It is supposed to be unfair to people who suffer from Epileptic Fits.

No idea why they should think that was what 'brainstorming' meant. I find their points of view irrational and ridculous but that is the answer.

You can, as long as your careful who you use it around. Some people find it offensive because some people are unable to fully use their brain in ideas (for exampe, those who are mentally challenged)
Though I am still unsure why they find it offensive. They say now you should replace "brainstorming" with "thoughtshowering", but honestly, I don't see why.

it refers to epilepsy. A fit used to be called a brainstorm.

Ugh, I hadn't heard about that but no doubt it's got something to do with political correctness and some group of people being overly-sensitive for whatever reason.

It has probably got something to do with it possibly offending people who have brain disorders/epilepsy etc.

No doubt soon we will be unable to say, do or write nothing for fear of it offending someone.

Hey ho.

That's news to me, but it wouldn't surprise me if something so ridiculous became an unwritten law.

I guess the brainless could be feeling discriminated against.....
