First learn how to speak properly and then just count with your child. After they have the counting words down start counting objects. Something fun like pennies or small candies. Or even to start a race. Just say 1 2 3 go. all these things will help your child learn to count. You can do the ABC's the same way. Don't always use the song.

By counting with the child. By the way, you also might work on teaching your child proper grammar. The question should have read: How do I teach my child to count?

Back to your question; when your child is with you find opportunities to count things and do it aloud. There are many such opportunities while shopping and cooking. Play counting games. Count things as you go about your daily activities when you child is around, count socks, count towels, count forks, spoons, etc. Also, if Sesame Street is available where you are, count with the Count.

I think the easiest way 2 do this, is 2 use the child's fingers. Place them in front of the child, touch them with ur finger and start counting from one. Allow the child 2 repeat after u, soon ur child will b saying one and so on. B patient, all the best. YAHWEH blesses.

Use LeapFrog's fridge magnets. In combination with sesame street and baby eintein videos, my so has learned to count to 20 on his own at 22 months. When we walk up the stairs to our apartment, we count the steps aloud. Whenever there is a chance to count something, including the french fries in his happy meal, the peas on his plate, or anything. He now loves to count things and will often do so without prompting, when he sees multiples of something.

one way to teach your child to count is to play counting games all day.

example: if your sitting waiting somewhere with your child take all the pens (really anything) out of your purse and play a little game where you count them. then ask your child to count them. pass them back and forth.

ask your child questions like: how many eyes do I have? how many fingers do you have? how many plates are on the table? how many children are on the swing-set?

also you can purchase educational toys that help you child visualize simple mathematical ideas.

Teach by example: when you give them toast cut it in four and count out the four pieces. Little kids really like manipulatives - little things that they can handle - cheerios, m&ms, checkers, etc.
Make a fun game - use a stuffed animal and feed it cotton balls and count them out. Also dice and playing cards are useful at playing counting and math games.
