I think it is not so much taboo to criticize the US Military as it is taboo to criticize the soldiers who are in the military. There is no doubt that there are some questionable decisions the military makes but it is important to remember that the majority of the soldiers in the military are not to blame. The soldiers are there to protect your rights and freedoms as well as to protect and bring those rights and freedoms to people who are having those rights denied. We do live in America and being in America means that we have a freedom of speech however, it is important to know what it is you are speaking for. For example it does no good to protest outside of an army post when the soldiers are deployed- all that does is make the families left behind uncomfotable and it also makes them feel as if their loved ones are fighting and dying for nothing. If you truly want to make a difference in your criticizing talk to your local, state and federal government representatives they are the ones that can make a difference. Not the individual soldiers who are just trying to do their job to make a living to protect not only their own families but all the families in America.

If you were in the military how would you like it. Because if you were in the military, 89% would tell me that you have already been to Iraq twice or Afghanistan, maybe this is your third tour. You have not matter what your occupation is been shoot at over a dozen times, on an average you have most likely seen with your own eyes 6 of your comrades die, and most men and women in the military take their job seriously. You have the right to express your feeling like every American, just understand these young people have nothing to do with the politics, they are just doing their job...and anyone doing their job should have pride and honor!

And just remember without a volunteer military, you would be in Iraq or Afghanistan.

You used the correct word. It's "taboo" not illegal. You have a right to speak your mind because of those who are in the military. THAT is why it is taboo. TABOO as in bad taste....as in foul language. Foul language is exactly what criticizing those who put their asses on the line for your life and liberty is.

As I walked up to the main gate of the naval station in San Diego one fall day in 1972 some hippie ***** spat on me and called me a baby killer. I had just got out of high school and went to boot camp. I didn't even know where Viet Nam was. Did I deserve that? I'm happy to see that people are wising up and separating soldiers and sailors from the powers that send them around the world.

The old saying was "Don't criticize until you've walked a mile in their mocassins." Now it should be changed to "...combat boots." The majority of those who criticize the military have never been in the military. IF YOU HAVEN'T SERVED, DON'T COMPLAIN!!!! It's like "If you don't vote, don't complain about who got elected." I am ex-Navy, served in VietNam, and am proud of my service to and for my country, even though I didn't agree with how the war was fought.

My experience is that most of the ones criticizing don't know what they're talking about anyway. It's easy to sit back and armchair quarterback a situation--especially when you don't know all the facts or anything about tactics other than watching a few war movies or playing something on xbox.

They are a strong lobby and do put themselves in harm's way, as anyone who has a foot still on detached duty in some jungle will tell you. However, the military does not draw the brightest people and they seem willing to be shipped off to fight in unconstitutional pre-emptive wars that support the colonial ambitions of the Junta currently occupying the White House.
I foolishly reported when I was ordered to and I wondered then why someone would volunteer for the sump-hole of Nam. I still wonder the same thing about Iraq.

Living in the greatest nation in the world and enjoying all of the wonderful things that the country is able to offer and then being critical of selfless individuals who help defend it is in bad taste.

You probably wouldn't be asking unless you yourself makes a habit of putting down our military and the men who sacrificed their life so that you would even have the right to ask such a question. Why don't you go spend a few years abroad and think about it.

Why is the US Military held to a higher standard than others, and why is it that the media delights in smearing the US Military?

You can criticize whom ever you want, and we will still defend your right to do so, but would you defend our rights to defend our nation? It appears not, isn't that Ironic?
