I just got a letter from a college i attended 10 years ago saying i owe $80 in 2 "parking tickets" (not NY state recognized) from sept of 1996, and if i do not pay they will send me to collections. Is that legal? Isn't there some sort of statute of limitations on collecting bills like that. I don't remember if I paid them or not...it was so long ago.
Can something that old affect my credit?

Yeah, it should be a seven year statute. Have you checked to see if they show up on your credit report (s).
There are lots of scams out there now regarding old bills and trying to collect them.

You should have had a problem renewing your drivers' license if these were on your record. You could always go to DMV to find out.

Either way, $80.00 isn't much if you just want to get it over with, if you DO owe it, I would pay it.

This happened to someone I knew with a phone company collections bill. After over ten years the company sold the recievable to a factoring company, a company that buys old debt and attempts to collect it. This showed up on his credit report but when he disputed the item and relayed that the original debt was over 9 years the collection was removed.

you is surely not in a position to get "complete coverage" on a motorized vehicle of that age. It sounds like you've criminal responsibility in ordinary words on your Ford so the criminal responsibility coverage will be a similar on the Trans Am or Corvette. There are some good element organizations which will grant comp and collision on those automobiles yet they received't write every person less than age 25.

i would not pay that. if they are just now billing you it could be a scam. i would call the collage personally (not the nuber on the letter) and ask them what it is for and to send you a statement. if it was going to go to collections they sould have sent it like 91/2 years ago
