and she told me that if she had sex before she was married and her father found out, he'd take her "back home" and kill her. Why? I agree that it's a sin (to have premarital sex) but what's with the death? Isn't that a sin in islam, too?

I am assuming that your friend is either Indian, Pakistani or in extreme cases Somalian.
It is unfortunate that Muslims try to mix cultural beliefs with the religion. 'Honor killings' are not of Islam, this is the mentality of people. Here in Canada we have the same problem. In the Indian community if the daughter brings dishonor to her family she is beaten or killed. Indian Muslims, as well as Indian Sikhs and hindus practice this but it is only tied to Islam in an attempt to make Islam look bad.
Indeed Killing in Islam, without proper reason (being attacked, self defense, etc) is a sin.

What can we expect? Just recently In Iran, they sentenced to death and killed a young girl just because she defended her cousin and herself from being raped and to think she was a minor. And try to think about this, NO ONE WENT OUT TO THE STREETS TO PROTEST IT, THEY WERE VERY SILENT AND LET THAT HORRIBLE THING TO HAPPEN JUST BECAUSE THE JUDGE WAS IRRITATED WITH THE PROTEST THAT THE ACCUSED DID IN THE COURTROOM. Look at what happened to the shiite Iraqi people who died from Sunni snipers in a procession just recently. No one is complaining about it because it was brother Muslims who are killing fellow Muslims. I just hope that Muslims will start noticing and voicing against this and stop taking lame excuses. If Christians will do that in a democratic country, they are sure that Christian authorities will be running after them because they are not considered as fundamentalists nor martyrs nor freedom fighters but Christian criminals and Christians do not usually start saying that they are not Christians but Christian criminals that should answer the law for taking the law into their hands. And no Christian father can ever stop that or take the life of that criminal because he will also be considered a criminal if he does that and has to answer it himself before the court of law.

I follow Islam, but I beleive in human nature too. I think sex before marriage is Ok, but that girls father is far too fundamentalistic. Killing her will be a act of ignorance towards Islam and human nature.

I believe its a sin in all religions , but when it comes to Arabic's and others from overseas its not about religion its about family respect , pride , ect . "They " believe that a woman is worthless to marry if she isn't a virgin . Women to "them" are possessions and only the man she marry's can touch her . Men from the Arabic culture and a lot of other cultures believe a women should be seen and not heard and to bare children and have only 1 husband , but men are allowed as many wives as he can financially take care of . "They " just use the religion as a way of manipulation and an excuse on why they do things . The Muslim religion is one of the most calm & spiritual religions and because of that people use it & other religions as a crutch . Its just an excuse for men to use , abuse and control thier wives.....

Who said it is a sin to have pre-marital sex? Just because some religious people or texts say so? Maybe her dad is crazy. I know of several Muslim women who have had pre-marital sex.

In Islam the penalty for such an act (if one confessed and wanted to be pured by being punished) is not killing , some ignorant people kill their daughters for this, just because they are violent by nature.

Women have no rights under islam, they are worth little more than for child baring.
They punish women far more harshly than men. Why a woman would want to become a muslim is beyond me. I do realize that many muslims do not strictly apply the quran in this way, so thats ok, but many do.

In Islam honor is the most important aspect for a man. A woman who dishonors her family is killed for her sins.
Women are considered property in Islam, and are treated as such. When a man wants to divorce his wife, he will call out "Barra, barra, barra (out, out, out)" exactly three times to signify that the woman must leave, and he will get a divorce.
Islam is a very barbaric, violent, and backward religion and culture. While other religions and cultures evolved through the centuries, Islam remaind the same.
