AOL is infamous for causing hardship to its members who want to cancel their account. In fact, there have been lawsuits against the company and AOL has agreed to pay millions in settlements to members who were wrongfully billed for membership after they had cancelled their account.
I've read this: Place a call to AOL to cancel. If they give you the 20 questions... tell them you sold your computer and you aren't going to buy another one. Hense, you no longer need the account.
Here are instructions to cancel AOL:
"To Cancel AOL: If you choose to write or fax us, please include the nature of your request and primary billing contact's full name, phone number, address, and handwritten signature. Additionally, for account security purposes, please provide ONE of the following:

They didn't use it without your knowledge or authorization. What probably happened was you used one of their CDs and forgot to cancel it. They ask for CC#. That happened to me. You have to call them and spend an hour on the phone begging the rep to cancel the account until you're reduced to crying and cursing before they'll actually do it. And just be warned, the bastards will only credit 2 months back to you even if they can see that there was no activity for a year. Also, they lie on your bank statement. It doesn't say AOL anywhere on it. I let 2 years of AOL charges go just because it was the same amount as the cost of my cigarette-rolling supplies. AOL sucks.

You can not cancel aol by e-mail or any of their links, if you try it, they'll ignore it and keep billing you. YOU MUST TELEPHONE AOL TO CANCEL! The number is hard to find and practically hidden, but here it is: 1-888-265-8005. [I just looked it up for you so I'd appreciate it if you'd come back and chose me as the best answer, thank you!].
Note: 5 states Attorney's General, including my state of Ohio, have lawsuits pending against aol for the very complaint that you have made. Good luck.

That has happened 2 1 of my friends b4, and she just called aol's # (it should be on the aol CD case) and told them 2 cancel it.
Hope I helped! =D
P.S. My friend also said she'd sue them, and they put the money back in her account and canceled her aol membership. =)

First contact your credit card company and dispute the charges. They will often take care of contacting the company who has put the charges through.
