Last night I left my boyfriend's house and all this vandelism had occurred on a street a few blocks from his house. I passed 3 or 4 police cars. This morning the police were outside of my house for 2 hours, but never did anything. Do I have a right to call the station and ask why they were at my house? I was not involved and I have an alibi (a strong one: my boyfriend's dad is the circuit court judge for the county in which this occurred for crying out loud). Should I call, or does that make me look guilty? Plus, do I have the right to ask what they were doing?? Thanks.

I didn't say I was above the law. I didn't do anything, so I have nothing to be above the law about. I have a judge to vouch for me, someone who's words they cannot twist if they don't come up with any real suspects. That's what I meant. He wouldn't lie for me if I actually had been involved, I'm saying he's a credible source of information.

I'm concerned because my dad is pissed that they were outside.

They were in the street in a car. They weren't on my property.

If you're curious it never hurts to ask. If you are innocent you have nothing to be worried about. What's the worst that can happen....they tell you it's top secret and you aren't allowed to know... then you're just back where you started and you didn't lose anything.

What exactly do you mean by 'outside your house?'. Were they sitting on your lawn, front porch or on the street in front of your house. If they were sitting on the street in front of your house, which is a public road, they do not have to explain anything to you. If they were on your property, you have a right to know, for your own safety, why. If they were sitting on the road in front of your house, they could have been staking out someones house who was a suspect. They are not obligated to give you that information. If you are not guilty of anything, why do you need an alibi? Just because your boyfriends dad is the circuit court judge dont mean jack. Does that make you above the law? I dont think so.

Yeah, you could ask. But unless they come up and pound on your front door, I wouldn't. Two reasons; cops will lie automatically, even when they don't have to, secondly, cops are suspicious by nature, and anything they didn't initiate is suspect. Remember, every year in the US there are at least two people shot while handcuffed in the back of a cop car- and no one goes to jail... except the person shot. Look at it this way- cops are crooks with badges and get jittery when they feel they're being watched or questioned. More people have been thrown into the legal system because of committing the singular offense that cops respond to --it's not written on the books-- but cops will react violently toward anyone they even THINK is committing "Contempt of Cop."

Kinda long for something simple. Yes you can call the police and ask them why they were in front or your house. I would assume you were a concerned citizen. The alibi and the judge part should really have no bearing. Just call and ask the legitimate and reasonable question.

Let your boyfriends dad, the circuit judge find out what was going on. Tell him when the police were at your house, he can find out why a lot easier than you and also get a better answer.

I frequently spend my half an hour to read this blog's posts daily along with a mug of coffee.

You are within your rights to find out why they were there. It might have nothing to do with you but the worst that will happen if you call is they will tell you they can't tell you that information.

They could have just been there typing up a report. Maybe they were just trying to be visible to help deter crime. If they didn't come knock on your door and ask to talk to you, then I wouldn't worry about it.
