The primary purpose of a marinade is to provide flavor. A marinade may also serve to tenderize the meat.

To add flavor before cooking the meat/vegetable. By letting the food soak in a marinade, it'll will retain more moisture and flavor by the time you're finished cooking. Most of the time when you overcook food it can be dry and rubbery and flavorless. But with a marinade, if you overcook it, there's still a chance of it retaining some of that moisture and almost all of that flavor. The biggest thing with a marinade is the flavor! The flavor will seep into the food and will stay there longer. When you're cooking, make sure that you add either more of the marinade or the dry spices that are in the marinade. So if rosemary and thyme are key in your marinade, spinkle a little of those dried herbs on the meat while it's grilling or sauteeing or however you're cooking it. It'll enhance the marinade and not only will you have flavor on the inside but the outside as well.
Hope that helps!

Marinade flavors the food and tenderizes it. I personally think people use lots of marinades because they don't really like the meat they are cooking. Why else would you load it up with a ton of other flavors?

The purpose is not only to season the meat, but the marinade also tenderizes the meat at the same time.

the longer you marinate your meat the flavor absorbs and tenderizes the meat so it melts in your mouth when eating and doesnt dry up when cooking.
