Im thinking about getting a budgie, but I have never had a bird before. I know about their care and all, but I wanted to know the most about how good they can be as pets. And can your train them to not fly away outside? Anyways... Are most budgies nice and social, and maybe even affectionate? What would happen if I got two/ Would they like eachother more than me? please give me your best and detailed information. Thanks.

They are great as a pet.You can have their wings clipped, but the wings will grow back.

When picking out a budgie, pick a social one. And if you want one that talks, the males train better than the female budgie. (go figuire!)
If you got two budgies, they will socialize with each other and not be as social with you.
Get one with a mirror, and it will be fine.

There is some resources on the net. I would suggest to you though that if you do get one, do not let it outside, it can fly safely around your home, like ours does. Only occasionally leaving little presents to clean up. When allowing them to fly in the house, make sure any cats are locked up and the stove or other hot surfaces are turned off.

cheers.

Budgies make great pets. They're very social birds. You should get one that's very young so you can train it to be affectionate, if that's not done when they're young they can be very standoffish.
I had one that would always sit beside me when I was watching TV or reading a book, he would even stand on the top of book and move his feet when I turned the page.
You can't train it not to fly but you should get their wings clipped regularly so they won't. A vet does this and it's VERY safe and what most bird owners do to stop their birds from flying out a window or even flying up into a ceiling fan or up too high for you to reach them.

yea u can let them fly but just make sure it is in your house because outside they tend to get confused or they may realize they like their freedom and never find their way home. And most budgies are nice and social and affectionate but it is best to get a young budgie if you want one with these personality characters. Try to buy a budgie between the ages 6 to 10 weeks. Also when you get an untame budgie try to get only one and train it first before you get another or else it will be alot more difficult to train. I hope this works out for you.

Clip the wings, but be very careful because if you do it wrong you will make it bleed. Have someone with lots of experience trimming wings show you how. Usually males are more socialable and affectionate than females, but if you get one from a breeder that handles the birds while they are young, like we do, the females can be just as sweet and sometimes even sweeter than the males. If you want it the bird to attatch to you get only one.
The clipping of the wings does not affect the happiness of the bird or shorten its life-it is comparable to cutting your fingernails.

Basically what everyone is saying is true. Get the wings clipped, and they won't and can't fly away. They might try the escape attempt the first time, but after they figure out, "Hey, I can't fly!" they won't be trying to fly away. While we are at it and talking about clipping things make sure their nails stay clipped also, unless they might get stuck on various items. Hope this information helps you! :-D

Get his wings clipped. That way, he can't fly away. That's why all the birds in pet stores just sit there in an open cage and don't fly away.

They can be a good pet - make sure you take them to the vet to get their wings clipped so they won't fly away.

they are very trainable. IF you are going to stay at home a lot, a advise you to get only 1, it will become more attached to you this way. However, if you plan on being outside most of the day, get two so its not lonely, cuz budgies can get deppression this way

Yea, clip the wings, lock the cage and feed them! Sounds like a suicide recipe to me.
