I have a cat who is 22 yrs. old. Another cat died of mammary cancer (a neutered male, no less) at age 12. I have another who at age 12 has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. His life expectancy now is only a few months.

I use cat fence-in for my back garden so my cats aren't in any danger of being hit by cats, taken by coyotes or exposed to diseases from other cats.

We have a cat sanctuary here in northern CA that has 75 cats all over the age of 15. www.brighthaven.org. Many of the cats are in their twenties. The cats have a raw meat diet and are treated by a slew of homeopathic veterinarians who donate their time to the sanctuary. The lady from whom I buy the supplement powder I use in my cats' raw meat diet, donates the powder for the cats' food at the sanctuary.

They can live for a very long time if you take good care of them. I have a friend and hers loved until 17, also my prof. has 2 cats-one 21 the other 19. Truth is, you never know with animals but they do have a tendency to live much longer than dogs-especially bigger dogs. I hope this helps.

Average life expectancy of cats...
outdoor only - farm cats - average lifespan 1 year (most die as kittens)
outdoor only - city cats - average lifespan 1 year
indoor/outdoor - average lifespan 2 years
indoor only or with an enclosed cat run - average lifespan 15 years.. can be older

spaying or neutering increases average lifespan by approx 2 years

proper feeding will make a difference as will regular vaccinations and deworming

Cats are living a lot longer nowadays with more people keeping their cats inside and new veterinary medicine. Our cat lived to be 17 and my Mom's cat lived to be 20. So cats can be expected to live pretty long.

I had a beautiful purebred Cymric (got lucky at the pound) and once she got to be about nine she developed a lot of urinary problems. At 14, she could barely walk and we decided to put her to sleep. I have a cat now, just a regular cat, that is 13 and still going strong. The best thing to do is just keep them inside, where they are safe.
