Go to the animal control shelter in your area. The best dog I ever had was of the pound! He's 30 pounds and still loves to play at 10 years old. Plus, these dogs need a home.

I strongly suggest you buy yourself an encyclopedia of dog breeds or borrow it from a library. Use that to compare breeds and narrow your search. Also check out the AKC website (American Kennel Club) and other sites devoted to dog fancy.
After you've gotten it down to a couple of choices, research each breed carefully and make an educated decision .... the cutest dog may not necessarily be best suited for your lifestyle, so think long and hard before you make up your mind.

A jack russell terrier. They are hyper and can play for hours at a time. Great dogs.

I know that they are not small, but Boxers make great house dogs, and love to run and play around. They are protective, and get along great with kids...

Go to local Animal Control. They have lots to pick from. You get a cutie pie for very little money, get to pick exactly the best for you and save a little critter. Getting a puppy is whole lot of work! Our local shelter works with each animal and knows their personality, likes and dislikes. You will get the best pet for you. Best wishes.

Get a MinPin ( minature pincher) They are small and very playful. My parents just got another and she is so nuts. She loves to play all the time.

Go for a weiner! They're great! Have you seen the PetCo commerical with the weiner dog and his toy? So cute!
