In general, in order to receive HDTV programs from a cable system, you have to subscribe to their digital cable service. All cable systems I know of only transmit HDTV over digital cable. Also, you may have to have an additional subscription to HDTV service; call your cable company and ask them what it takes to get HDTV to your set.

HDTV programming is the format broadcast for programs(shows) used to view High Definition Television. It is the signal picked up by your HDTV. You don't have to program this yourself to receive the signal, assuming that you hooked up your TV correctly to your cable input. This signal is broadcast through the cable to everyone, but only HDTV's are equipped to read the enriched signal information.
