What country are you talking about? If you are talking about Iraq the Shites are the Majority and the Sunni is the minority they were in power because Sadaam was a Sunni. The reason they hate each other is the same reason protestants hate catholics in some regions and don't in other regions of the world.

I'm Sunni and I love Shia, won't be one but I have a great deal of respect for them. We've got some differences but that said I differ with sunnis too on some issues. We are all Muslims afterall. How could one hate people who have soo much respect for the Prophet's family? just some Sunnis and Shia mislead others into distrusting and disliking one another. Shame on them. Also holding grudges in not an Islamic trait nor is it permissiable. I wonder why some people (some really educated) still do that? ... Anyways, of late (after the Israeli-Lebanese war) I am seeing a lot of Muslim (shia and sunni) putting their differences aside and supporting one another. Hopefully , Sunni -Shia love will flourish in the future. Also, Shia are the majority in Iraq, sunnis are the minority. Unfortunately because of the instability in Iraq things got really ugly. Iraq has never had a civil war before, Shia and sunnis have aways lived along side, through good and bad, but of late with alqeada butting in their affairs and the occupation, things aren't looking too bright. I pray Iraqis overcome this.

You saw the last war in Lebanon?
Hezbullah was Shiia and in spite of this all Muslims Sunni and Shiia supported Hezbullah.....It's more political in some times than being religious....I know that some catholics hate protestants too why don't you ask them for the reason? The reason is when someone disgusts your sacred beliefs you will respond in an offensive way and this is what is happening all the time between Sunni and Shiaa....They have many things in common and the basics of Islam is the same for both..but they differ in the branches of the teachings like marriage, divorce, prayer "in the small details" , the biggest problem between them is a historical political problem...and some people in the mid-east for political purposes want the separation between the Sunni and Shiaa to continue so they can resume their rule to their countries. It's a complex political and historical issue more than being religious afterall.

No we don't.
Real Muslims who truly understand their religion know quiet well that those having different beliefs or faiths should not be hated for that. Allah frankly said it in the Quran, religion cannot be forced.
For instance, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) prayed God to help and forgive the pagans who attacked him and tried to get him killed all the time instead of taking revenge - a pure example for Muslims to follow in everyday life. Through that, real Muslims (whether Sunni or Shiite) understand that hatred should not be associated to those of different sects.
I'm Sunni and live with many Shiite people. No mutual hatred is felt at all. We live in peace.

There is a difference in what the the groups believe but that generally does not cause fighting etc.you can not generalize all sunni and shia to be this way , I am Sunni and have many shia friends. Research outside the mainstream media will usually reflect this. I applaude your curiosity and your having the guts to ask this question instead of relying on fox news!!!!!!!!!!

Many, or maybe even most Sunni, believe the Shia's version of Islam is an affront to Islam, based on the Sunni tradition.
Islam is a violent religion and difference are thus invariably dealt with in this way.
There are many doctrinal difference but the essential one is that Shia believe that their is a genetic succession to Muhammad's bloodline. Sunni's reject this idea.
Shia are the muslims who love to carry around big pictures of angry islamic leaders. Sunni's are the ones who like to kill people who carry any pictures.

The answer is simple. There are many tribes in the mid east. They have never been able to get along with each other. It's my way or the highway. Believe my way or I'll kill you.
Even in the U.S. different tribes of indians couldn't get along with each other. They fought with each other all the time. Finally they moved into the modern century.
Sooner or later Muslims will move out of the dark ages too. But, They won't go without a struggle.

Because they iman disagree with each other over minor issues. The followers pay for the consequences. Muslims are born into their religion and have little choice about that. I feel teh younger generations of muslims must educate themselves appropriately and speak up.
