My brother is in the Army and has been for 22 years. He's been overseas many times and just got back from Iraq a few months ago. Just like 'common sense' said, there are many dangerous professions in this world today. No one should let this fighting in Iraq discourage them from joining the armed forces.

It would depend upon what MOS (job) you went into. But I do know this, more soldiers are killed in car and motorcycle accidents than are killed in combat. I think it's a side effect of long deployments, soldiers are deployed for a year or more, then when they get back they try to make up for lost time and they drive fast and wrecklessly, they drive drunk and sometimes they are so anxious to see their families that they drive sleepy. It's really sad.

lets put it this way, together all the americans that died up to date in all the wars we have ever been involved in since the founding of this country does not add up to the amount of people killed on our streets and highways in traffic collisions, hence proving that it is safer to be in a war than to be driving around town.
