used cows milk, but once they were over 12 mths, my mum used goats millk with my brother, from being 4mths old.
Sma gold is for the younger babies, I think it contains more calories than sma white. I used sma white from around 6mths I think. Neither of my kids were milk lovers and I used to mix sma milk with the powdered food, especially for my oldest as he was 8 weeks prem and therefore always quite small and light for his age

Essentially they are both made from cow's milk, but each from different parts. The gold is made from whey which is the lighter liquid part of the milk. The white is made from the curds or solid protein part of the milk. Calorie for calorie they are roughly the same, but the body digests them differently. The solid content of the white milk takes longer to digest hence the reason for moving onto it if your baby is 'hungrier' or not going very long between feeds. Usually babies start on gold and may or may not need to move on to white, but it is suitable for use (although not in all cases) for babies from birth.

As far as I remember sma gold is richer and is better for hungrier babies. It was recommended for my son.

I think its fat content....either that or some babies dont tolerate the gold if the are colic
