im not a man but to answer this in a womens prospective would be: If the daughter was really close to her father and they had a really good relationship, then I would bet the father would be pleased to be asked before hand. and you would probably score points with your girlfriend as well! But if the father and daughter is not in a good relationship, forget about it. It might end up being uncomfortable for everyone.

I expect the man who will want to marry my daughter one day to not only ask her father, but me as well. I know it is a very respectable thing to do, and it should be expected. I also expect my sons to ask the parents of their intended for permission to marry their daughters.
Even if a parent says no however, it will still be up to the woman to say yes or no. Not all parents like the one who wants to be with their child but in the long run, it isnt up to them.

I would! I think that it's respectful and the right thing to do. I think that that tradition was stopped because men don't have the balls that they once did. It's hard to face a dad and ask him if you can be his daughter's boyfriend or if you can marry his daughter. It's easier to avoid and run away from that situation like a chicken. Fortunately, that's a tradition that has been lost mainly in the United States...or course!

Well I can tell you this much:
My fiance asked my dad but the key here is : I was 7 months pregnant and we were living with my folks while we found a place~Yes it could have defiantely had a bad outcome but ulitimately it was great that he did ask because I think that my dad has more respect for him because he asked his permission first. If you are into the traditional aspect then I would definately go for it.

I was told explicitly by the woman I married not to bother asking permission.

Not permission, I think it should be the girl's decision, but I would certainly do my best to impress him and get along well with him. And of course in a way, he would become my dad too...
Too bad it's not going to happen.

My husband did. I told him when we first started dating that I would never marry a man that didn't have the respect to do that.

my boyfriend asked my dad permission to date me. My parents love my boyfriend because of that and also cuz he's a great person. I would reccommend any guy to do that especially for marriage. The parents will like you waaaay more.

My fiance asked both my parents, and that really sold me on him.
It's not that it's old fashioned or what have you. It was assuring my parents that he was in control of his life and knew that he wanted me to be by his side.
He wanted them to be okay with the situation. I think that is VERY honorable.

My husband did as a gesture of respect to my parents. He was 28 yrs. old at the time and I was 32 yrs. old.
