You should probably start with the simplest approach. Just add some eggs & olive or flax seed oil to his diet...brewers yeast is fantastic too .... and watch her coat grow luxurious. Then if he's still scratching, break open your piggybank and visit the vet..Good luck!

Could be a food allergy, talk to your vet or even someone with some sense at a good pet store, My poodle use to be neurotic about scratching, chewing, etc. I first changed his treats, then his food, it's helped a lot, sometimes I do give him benedryl (per vets orders) but I think he's like me and allergic to everything! I feed him a food called Natural Balance. www.naturalbalance.net It has no preservitives, etc. They have several different flavors and gave me a sample of each. My dog chose his own flavor, and that is what I have stuck with, he like the venison flavor. They also have all natural treats that he loves, now when he scratches... I think it's more like a person that bites their nails. Boredom.

Have you taken him/her to the vet? It's a couple of possibilities, one being your doggy has a bladder or kidney infection and is hoping to scratch "internally" but cannot. The other possibility is that your dog is sensitive to some of your cleaning agents in the house, or on your carpets, or sprays (febreeze, etc.) I would get him a good bath and see if that cuts down on the scratching and eliminate possible products that he is coming into contact. (such as bedding that he/she may have fabric softner sensitivity). Hopes he quits scratching as that is irritating his skin. The vet may be able to prescribe an anti-itch product, too. Take care.

To start off, I know that some people say to bathe your dog often, but that really isn't that good of a thing to do. They have special oils on their skin and bathing too much can be bad for them. But the best thing you could do is to take your dog to a vet. There's many, many possibilities, one of them being allergies. One of my dogs that we had to put down had allergies all her life, and she lived as long as we could let her, but maybe 8-10 years into her life we had to put her to sleep because of how much she was suffering. She started to sneeze out blood and everything, and we decided the best thing to do would be to put her down. Her life would have been a lot shorter if not for her medication. So you should definitly take them to a vet. One of my current dogs used to do what you are escribing, and now she's on medication and is fine.
So definitly take them to a vet.

Unfortunately this time of year atopy, or dog hayfever, is the most common cause of itchy skin. Allergies to inhaled substances (pollens, weeds, grasses, mold, etc) or food allergies or both produce itchy skin in dogs. Other possibilities include mites, lice, ringworm. Your vet will be able to help. Good Luck!!

My beagle/basset has been scratching his ears lately, but he didn't have that problem when we first got him.
Could a food allergy cause that problem?
Also, do you have a picture of your dog on line? Just curious.

This could be an allergy to something in his environment, or food. Your vet can take some blood and run and allergy test on him. The test is about $250.00-$400.00 depending on the vet. I hope this has helped. Good luck.

It might be dirty/sweaty. Make sure to wash it often...or else it might have a bug bite of some sort. Or something else bothering it. Get it checked out if it doesn't go away after a weeks or so.

Could be food allergies. Switch to food designed for such (Petsmart, your vet), then if it continues, please see your vet. See your vet first, there could be other cooters on your dog, as well. Best of luck!
