What happened to St johns ambulance?

The weekly clubs that kids to enrol onto to learn first aid training was a 'cool' thing back in the 80's. The under 10s used to be called 'badgers'. You would get a certificate if you passed things like cpr and recovery positions.

Children army camps used to offer these type of skills too. Just like scouts and brownies.

My community used to be filled with these types of clubs for the kids and now i'm older the nearest one is 15 miles away in the city. Pathetic.

DIB DIB DIB.

This was originally an answer to a question, that inspired me to ask...

st john ambulance is still active, with adult members, cadets and badgers, if you look up the web site www.stjohnwales.co.uk, you should find the link to English web site.
if you are that interested in joining, why not ask the members when you see at a football match or another event. adult member are now in green instead of the traditional black and white. i always pass on the divisional number, because at HQ the other divisional numbers are held so that a person can contact the nearest division.

St John Ambulance (note John, not John's) is still very active with thousands of members in the UK and more worldwide! I am a St John Cadet (as I'm under 18) and St John still has badgers for 5-10year olds.

There are still many divisions throughout the UK and if you go to www.sja.org.uk you can do a search for the division (or unit) closest to you.

St John Ambulance is present at many events, large and small (this weekend alone I have been to a community event and a premiership football match!). It is still worthwhile for people of ANY age to learn new skills and meet loads of new friends.

Also of note is that some advanced members aided in 'Operation Constant Care' recently which provided cover to replace ambulance technicians who were on strike in Merseyside.

I was a cadet and then an adult member of St John Ambulance...There are loads of divisions where I live (Dorset- south coast) St John is still very much alive and kicking with groups of badgers, cadets and adult members. Type St John Ambulance into google and ring the central number...i'm sure there must be more groups nearer to you xx

In many places (particularly in Australia) it has been supplanted by a professional ambulance service.

In some areas they continue to run first aid courses. I think they still have some form of contact with sports where the volunteer service attend sporting events and provide first aid.

I know it's still around in Ontario but they do more volunteering at sports and special events. I know that they usually use their standards when measuring other first aid programs qualifications. Most workplaces require that you take a St.John's first aid course as compared to others.

I think that part of the problem is the litigation society. Event holders require fully qualified paramedic staff.

I strongly believe, however, that first aid ought to be taught in schools as a compulsory subject..

Look in Yellow Pages for your nearest branch. They will teach you first aid and you dont have to have any previous experience or courses to attend. Dont forget tho that St John ambulance is a religious organisation and prayers etc are said.
