Cocktail attire technically means a suit for men, and a cocktail dress for women, which usually means a short dress (preferably not career wear). I prefer a little black dress -- and depending how formal you think the event is, you can glam it up with accessories. Of course you have lots of leniency in what you wear -- a dressy pantsuit, a lovely skirt and top, etc. Everyone interprets the meaning of dress requests differently.

It means you should dress as a cocktail. If you're a gentleman, paint your nose green like an olive, with a red tip for the pimento. If you're a lady, wear something orange and go as a Screwdriver, or red for a Bloody Mary. Pin the appropriate garnish (celery stick, orange slice) to your bodice. Some people still stick a big straw down the back of their collar, but that's considered old-fashioned these days and is seldom seen anymore.

That means "dress up." Women should wear a nice "after five" outfit. Men should wear a suit or dressy slacks and a sports jacket.
