The First Commandment forbids idolatry. Man commits idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc.
In the lands that surrounded Israel, there were many who worshiped false gods including the Egyptians. Later the Jews had to deal with the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses worshiped by their Governors and occupying forces.
Today people put many things in front of God in their lives including money, status, self, power, etc.
With love in Christ.

Dearest reader,
The Israelites lived in a culture where there were MANY gods throughout Caanan and Egypt. They were statues mostly, household ones and large temple ones. Some were people, some were animals. So the people were used to thinking that there were many gods to choose from.
That's what made the Jewish faith different. God, who called himself Yahweh to Moses, or "I am who I am," said that He was only one God. He actuallly spoke to Moses, showed Himself in the burning bush and Moses saw God use His finger to write on the tablets on the mountain. The glory of God shone on Moses face after that. The people created a golden calf while he was gone on the mountain, so that's why he smashed the tablets and had to go create new ones back up the mountain.
But God was an invisible God, so this was very different for the people in that culture. It took faith. That's why we talk about the Faith of Brother Abraham, the first follower of our Jewish God, until Christ came. Now He's the Father of both religions.
In modern times, it is said that whatever you put before God is an idol...the new car, girlfriend, clothes, our intelligence and pride...because we owe it all to Him as all things come from Him.
More on this in the book of Exodus where the story of the Ten Commandments come.

Because that religion requires absolute obedience. In the time that Christianity came forward, they were being persecuted by the Romans. The best way to combat that pressure was to recruit new members, while at the same time denying any other group. By making it a sin to worship any other God, the Christians were able to focus worshipers into a single cohesive group that eventually became powerful enough to wipe out their opposing views. It's sort of like looking at two handfuls of rice. If you keep taking rice from the other hand and not allowing the other hand to take any back, then before you know it the one hand is pretty empty. This type of recruitment is still being practiced today, which is why the Christian religion can tend to be narrow minded. Luckily many of the younger members have broader views and are starting to incorporate a more forgiving and compassionate stance in regards to other religions.

This is where the Gnostics come in. They claim that the early Jews were a sect instead of wholly monotheistic. Moses, being one of the few Monotheists, led the slave race out of Egypt (A Highly Pagan Area.)
As one of the conditions of following Moses back to the land he said was waiting for them, Moses ministerd them to his monothesitc faith called Judaism of which there is one God called Yahweh.
It is speculated that originally Yahweh was part of a pantheon of Gods including a consort Shekinah.
While in the desert, the Tribes were noted as making gold idols of what Moses referred to as false Gods. It made him so angry that he broke the tablets of the commandments and started again. In this time. he specifically edited them to include not worshipping other Gods.

There is only one God. The other "Gods" that people talk about is Satan and a lot of angels that were sent down to Earth after the War in Heaven. Every religion that does not accept God and Jesus Christ is tricking others into being a demonic worshiper.

Roman Catholicism is on a special tangent from what the Bible teaches it truly is the reason Catholics at the prompt are not inspire to study the Bible and mass is held in latin. even as Catholics study the Bible complications commence to get up as they question the non secular rituals that take position interior the Catholic Church - an enlightened catholic led the reformation interior the sixteenth century - Martin Luther. i am going to also make a press release that many catholics will locate incendiary - Catholics at the prompt are not Christians; they are Roman Catholic. I make that statement depending at good right here: one million. A christian does not choose a actual priest. Any guy/lady who's kept by ability of giving their existence to Christ has develop right into a priest who can frame of mind God freely because they have a non secular extreme priest in accordance to the order of Melchizediek (Jesus Christ himself). This invalidates the want to flow to confession. 2. A christian is commanded now to not pray to any angel or worship any angel nor pray to any Virgin Mary - the purely get admission to to God is via Christ. 3. Christians are meant to have a berean concepts-set (which ability to benefit the bible) and Catholics at the prompt are not inspired to take action. you should also recognize that once Martin Luther were given revelation from God he left the monastery and were given married. element i'm making is that there is not any the position interior the bible the position it requries adult men or females to develop into clergymen and nuns....all kinds of pretend piety.... not meant as an incendiary yet meant to be a watch opener to all and sundry who has fallen for pretend piety...

Two Tables of Stone
equals
Two Lists of Commandments
One of the best-kept secrets in the discussions on the Ten Commandments concerns the fact that (according to the story) Moses smashed the first set of tables in a fit of anger, because the Israelites chose to worship the golden calf. (That this would happen or would be told casts doubt on the whole Exodus tale, but we will not cover that here.)
As the tale goes, Moses smashed the tables of stone, and God said he'd make a new set of tables containing "the words that were on the first" (Ex. 34:1). However, as we will see on this page, the second Ten Commandments in no way resemble the first set. To popularize this knowledge is to knock the wind out of this entire move to place "The" Ten Commandments in our schools.
First Tables of Stone
(Exodus 20, "which Moses didst break")
Second Tables of Stone
(Exodus 34, "the words that were on the first")
1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.
1. Thou shalt worship no other god (For the Lord is a jealous god).

You hit the nail right on. There are other gods in this world realms. The Bible god is just one of many. Christians are brainwashed by their parents and cheated by their pastors. The story goes on. People should wake up and investigate their religions carefully before indoctrinating their children further. Sad.

It is not like saying that
When GOD said "Thou shall not have other gods before me"
I'd say He means , Worship me, and don't make anyone else or anything else the reason for your living"
Yes, there are other gods, but nothing like our GOD, who created the world and everything in it, who gives us Life and Eternal Life, the Only One who can redeem us, and has the power to do much more than we could possibly imagine
People often worship money and material things, or worship a lover, worship ideas, and forget to worship GOD
GOD asks us to be a priority in our lives
It is up to us to obey or not

Two possibilities:
A == things which people call gods but actually are not. Like the sun.
B == things which people identify with G-d but are not. Like jesus.
