my son will be 7 months old, september 3rd and because he is not sitting up unsupported by himself, i am not ready to give him finger food like his pedetrician says. Mommy's know best!!! When i do try him out on first finger foods, what should they be? wheat bread? diced peaches? slices of bananas? gerber wagon wheels, fruit and veggie puffs, are they easy to dissolve? i heard plain ricecakes are good to start and frozen bagels, has anyone ever done that? i think cheerios, he would choke on...he only has 2 teeth and they are not totally there yet.

i stuck with the veggi puffs and wagon wheels since they dissolve easily...the bread could actually choke him. it's not a good idea to give him much of anything if he cant sit up and support himself yet

Cheerios actually melt so they should be okay he won't need to chew them, but if they make you uncomfortable wait for now. The best to get started with are bananas if your son likes them and doesn't get gas from them. They are easy to get hold of and squish so nice that they are fun to play with. I would stay away from bread and bagels until he does make chewing motions they just get so chewy and sticky but never really melt.
My kids like ricecakes, and they come in lots of flavors. I don't usually buy the prepackaged finger food, I used it as a way to introduce and transition them to adult table food, although I did buy the biter biscuits, they work really well for first finger foods and teething and they are fun to dip in baby food and pudding.
Having fun foods to touch on the high chair tray may be motivation to sit up and take notice, literally...lol.
Have you discussed with your pediatrician why he isn't sitting unsupported, maybe its normal, I don't know, my kids did everything at abnormal times, (my boys sat up at three months and were sitting unsupported at 4 months, but they started talking at 5 months so they are just weird).

nononono frozen things! i read that alot, apparently they aren't that good...Cheerios are very good finger foods, as are all the Gerber ones you mentioned. My 2 kids liked them alot at that age, and they dissolve very well, so no choking. I'd stick with those first. Also remember to avoid any foods he might be allergic/sensitive too. But, as I mentioned, Cheerios, and the Gerber things. Also, steamed carrots, cut into small pieces and cooled would work well. Fruits also, just nothing too fibrous or stringy.

Fruit Slices are really good. Banana Slices and Diced/Small Slices of peaches as you say and also things like:

Pieces of Strawberries

Small chunks ripe, peeled fruit, like mango, plum, pear, peach, cantaloupe, seedless watermelon

Cubes of tofu

Well-cooked pasta spirals, cut into pieces

Small chunks of cheese

Well cooked pieces of carrots

Also I wouldn't try breads till he is a bit older...maybe 9 or 12 months.

You can also find some more info at this website, it has a list of finger foods for babies/small children:

I would go with a higher stage of food, not finger food yet. From personal experience, especially without being able to support himself and only having two teeth he could choke. If he's hungrier, try adding some baby cereal, like rice or apple banana to his formula/milk. Not so it's thick but enough to make a thin shake and he will be more full. It worked with mine before finger foods :)

I gave my son the teething biscuits and the wagon wheels until he got some more teeth. There is a product out by Munchkin that you can put fruit pieces in if you worry about choking. They sell them in target and babies r us. The fruit puffs disolve fairly quickly (I have tasted the banana ones)

dont give him bread, he has no teeth to chew it up with and its very dry which will be easily choked on. Start with those gerber stars. Then go to cherios. They dont need teeth to chew those, just experience having solids in their mouth. Frozen bagles are ok if he's teething, but my son never liked them because they didn't tast like anything.
Babies aren't using their teeth to chew things up, they are pretty much using their gums and their toungue to move things around. you can try those fruit cups by dole that have peaches and pears. they are really soft and tasty, he cant choke on those things, he'll just mash them up with his gums until they turn into a mushy liquid.
think of what would be easy to get down without teeth. wet things are best, not dry things like bread.

When you are ready to start finger foods, I'd try -

plain unsalted rice cakes
slices of bananas
frozen blueberries that have been thawed and smooshed a bit
Cheerios
Rice Chex
teething biscuits
well cooked sweet potatoes cut into small chunks
thick mashed potatoes or chunks of baked potatoes
diced fruits

Jelly is often frowned upon for toddlers because of all the sugar in it. Butter is to fattening to easily be slabbing on each little thing. attempt toasting the bread for one, toddlers frequently like that extra constructive. also attempt dabbing a small volume of fruit infant foodstuff on to it. It provides it a mode they prefer and are used to, and after a lengthy time period even as they're used to the toast the baby foodstuff would now not be mandatory. you could also attempt the liquid in cottage cheese or some yogurt. someone above element out dry cereal which docs at the on the spot are frequently affirming no to because they could not soak up sufficient spit to get tender. i'd wait till eventually at leas a year for that.
