Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD. (There is something about looking directly at glowing phosphors!)
Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 720 x 1280 range.
Plasma is heavier and uses more power than flat panel LCD.
There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable or they don't last as long, but that is no longer true with the latest models. Plasma phosphors dim slowly over time (but not as fast as CRT phosphors); but direct view LCDs use flourescent lamps which also dim and eventually burn out (some are replaceable). Projection LCD sets have bulbs of limited life, but are replaceable and the lifetime is a few thousand hours of viewing.
Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. There are ways to minimize this, however. many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen. This could also be a problem with extended playing of video games if there is a background image that remains stationary.
Plasmas come in larger sizes, although large flat panel LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive. LCD projectors can be 70".
LCD contrast and brightness can be reduced when viewing from off-center (both flat and projector, but sets will vary).

The new Samsung LCD range is stunning, especially the 40" LE40R74BD. Comparing this side by side with a standard 42" plasma will show you how good the LCD is.
Samsung are the worlds largest LCD screen manufacturer, and these TV's incorporate their latest LCD technology which means an incredibly high contrast ratio 5000:1. This when combined with high resultion graphics and high refresh rate gives a crisp bright realistic image.
If I was going for a TV of this size, this is the one I'd pick!

A plasma screen is brighter than an LCD but the problem is that a plasma screen tv's light has to be replaced by a special bulb that can cost $100 if it burns out or breaks. So if I were you I'd get the LCD.

Plasma will give you a much richer, vibrant picture quality in a wide spectrum(degrees) of viewing angle. LCD is very good quality, but washes out more as the angle of view increases and is more directly effected by ambient light source( the brighter the room the harder it is to see). If you are sitting squarely in front of the screen and light levels are moderate to low, LCD is fine and a much lower cost than plasma. If you want to impress your buddies on Game Day however, Plasma is the way to go. LCD technology is improving more and more these days due to it's wider popularity.

LCD is the most reliable we think but time will tell! One of it's outstanding features is that the screen does not reflect the light from windows or lamps. Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice. I recommend the Sony Bravia KDL40X2000. It is the best panel TV on the market but will cost about £2000. Second choice is any LG TV. In about five years there will be a new format called OCD or whatever, giving an even better picture making all else redundant. Bearing in mind everything in hi-tech gets better and cheaper, now is a good time to buy a KDL40X2000.

Whatever you do dont get a plasma get an lcd, they cost less and last longer, also they use less electric,i had 42 inch plasma for about 3 years and got rid of it for an lcd,if you have sky+ or something like a dvd and leave it on pause for a few minutes the screen gets burnt, this does not happen with an lcd, make sure its hd ready so if you have sky hd or a hd dvd player etc you will get even clearer pictures,i had the sony bravia 40 inch with wall bracket and it only cost me £1614,00,where as just for my plasma cost me £2750,00.if you want to no where i had mine from email me and ill let you know where on the internet you can get one like mine, hopw ive answered your question, good luck.

Well... Plasma is older technology, LCD is better.. However, for 42 inches... still plasma.. if possible, wait for the better LCD to be out. LCD is more durable in quality than Plasma

lcd is best, we had a plasma before and if there is an icon (like itv2) in the corner if it is on the same channel for a long time it will burn into the screen and sometimes stays for ages or never goes away even when you change channels you can still see it
common fault with all plasmas unfortunatly
....so i would say lcd we had our lcd for ages and no such problems yet

To make it as short as possible, I have been doing research on Plasma and LCD over the year. the only advantage the lcd has over plasma is the screen-burn immunity. however, new generations of plasma has already imrpoved on this aspect. Therefore u can almost say that lcd now has NO advantage over plasma[maybe there's one, plasma color fades over time. however, the process is REALLY VERY slow]... even for the price. Since this year, the price of lcd has been dropping alot, but still for a same resolution and screen size plasma n lcd, the lcd will be much more expensive. Advantages of plasma over lcd: Contrast Ratio, grey scaling(black levels), much lesser motion artifacts and much more cheaper. If u wish to know more about them and HDTVs, u can purchase a "What Video" magazine, it's simply an amazing mag with over 25 years of tv reviews with their own lab n unique equpiments to test the "TRUE" specification of the HDTV! I will only consider to have a LCD TV if i want a small screen for my room.
Just want to remind u that never trust what a saleman recommend as they usually recommends those Tvs with high comission for them to u. And NEVER trust the claimed Brightness, Contrast Ratio and Black levels from the brands. From the tests in "What Video", almost all brands boast their specification to attract consumers. And it's not really "safe" by judging the quality of image in TV stores. From I have learnt from a saleman who working in a grand tv store. They usually calibrate those Tvs set with high comission better, and purposely make those with lower comission looks poorer. I guess the only way to check out which has a picture quality is to buy a decent HDTV magazine and start reading it. =)
Conclusion- If u are those who demand extremely high performance from your Tv, ONLY buy plasma tv from either Panasonic or Pioneer. Their plasma tv are always ranked top in "What Video". If u decided to have a LCD tv, ONLY buy them from either Sony or Panasonic. Their LCDs are always in the top league of the LCD war. Toshiba and Samsung newest model of LCDs are great as well. Remember to buy one that supports 1080p if are a movie fan who wants to have a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. Good Luck on choosing your Tv! =)
