My little boy (2 1/2) likes using his potty & wearing big-boy pants, the problem is when we go for a walk or a picnic in the woods, I put him back in a diaper which he hates.
He cant hold on for long & often does'nt need to go before we leave the house. We live in a rural setting & used to enjoy getting out & about but now neither of us are keen.
Please help. lol. Emma xx

At 2-1/2 he should be able to go at least 30 minutes without needing a toilet. You're giving a very mixed message by putting a diaper on him - is it ok or not ok to use the diaper? If it's OK, why bother with the toilet?

I say no diaper...

I wouldn't put a diaper back on him at all, either day or night now that he is potty training. If you have him where he feels he is a big boy now then you need to reinforce that constantly and not use diapers.

Before you leave the house make sure he uses the potty. You don't need to ask him, you tell him. Tell him that big boys always go potty before they leave the house to go anywhere and that if he doesn't use the potty then you can't go out until he does. If he really likes going out then he will start using it, especially if you don't go out once or twice because he didn't.

I would reserve the "tree" for a little later in life, after he is completely trained and you are out and he really needs to go, then the tree can be used, almost like a special treat.

It's good that he is training at this age, boys usually take longer.

Good luck and congratulations.

If he doesnt like his nappy then don't put it on.

Leave him in big-boy pants. Before you leave the house, get him to go to the toilet.

Also take spares. If its possible see if you can take a potty with you (some pottys are designed for travelling proposes, heres a link for one, they've been about for ages http://www.lullabyebaby.com/juvenile_sol/travel_potty_seat.htm) or ideally choose any picnic area that is close to toilet facilities.

On your trip out, limit him with drinks so he is less likely to frequently go.

start off with short walks, if its a necessity that you have to take long walks than have him wear a pull-up. If you really don't want to put them things on him (because they are like diapers). Honestly I sometimes think that they are just an excuse for laziness...I have a daughter that I had potty trained when she was 1 1/2 years old and when her dad left, I had to put her back into diapers, I've tried the pull-ups and she just never used them like big girl pants, she used them as diapers. But when I had panties on her, than it was easier for me to potty train. But like I said, if you don't really want to put big pants (pull-ups)on him take shorter walks unless necessary. But if he don't like wearing the pull-ups than try to keep in the route where you know where you can make pit stops at for him to go potty. but my sisters son now was easier when it came to pull-up pants. He knew between the diffrences.

Let him wear pants, and take lots of spare pairs of pants and trousers. Otherwise he's getting mixed messages about potty training. Let him wee on a tree, it's a lot easier for a boy than a girl!! He will soon get the hang of holding on.

Well just don't leave until he goes to the restroom, and just trust him that he will tell you when he has to go. And ask him about every half hour to see, sometimes children forget.

(if you're out in the woods or in a secluded area with no bathroom in sight just let him go #1 on a tree, it's better than him having an accident in his pants)

I have 3 children myself and often wondered the same thing. What I did with each of my children was to leave their pants on. I found that if I put their nappy back on they would forget about telling me if they needed the toilet. Also this way they learn to hold themselves if they do need the toilet when your out and about. I would recommend that you take some clean clothes out with you just in case.

I would let him wear undies. I would caution you about teaching him to pee behind a tree, we did that with my now three-year-old son then had to teach him why you can't just pee behind a stoplight pole or any other large tree-like structure. A better option would be to take a potty or some diapers with you and teach him to aim for them, then he might not drop trou walking down the street later.
Another note, our son never had to pee before we left the house when we asked him, then one day Grandma came over and didn't ask. She just told him to "pee please" and he did. Now he always "empties his penis" before we leave. Maybe try telling him to try to empty his penis before you leave rather than asking him IF he has to go.
Have fun

go buy some like pull-up's and tell him there under wear carry a clean one just in case. But that way he fell's like a big boy. He can still use the bathroom if you can get to one soon enought but if he has a problum he covered there too.

Let him wear pants!
Put a nappy in your bag and he needs to go - then point percy at the nappy. Or go behind a tree! Most of us have done that. Pack baby wipes too, in case of poo.
Now get back out there!
