A very weird religious cult created by hack Sci Fi writer L. Ron Hubbard. When I say very weird, it is no more weird than any other religion. They are a bit more of a mind control cult than most, though maybe it just seems that way to me. All religion is essentially some form of brain washing.
They basically have several "levels" of adherents, and it cost a lot of money to take the training. Some estimate that it costs over $400,000 to reach the top levels. Their basic idea is that humanity is infected with the souls (called thetans) of some ancient criminals that were banished to the earth millions of years ago. It is these criminal souls that cause disease and mental illness. They teach that some alien race led by Xenu will be coming eventually to reclaim us.
The big difference with them is they are very very aggressive with their "enemies" (ie former scientologists, or anyone who speaks ill of them) They have a group of lawyers who will sue people, destroy their credit, generally make their lives miserable. The religion "created" by L Ron Hubbard based on his great imagination and belief in science fiction, which is mixed with the philosophy of science...watever that is..saying that we r the descendants of aliens who were shipped to earth as prisoners...sort of like the suspected terrorists shipped to Guantanamo Bay that kind of thing... =) jk

It is a fiction book that people now view as a religion.
It typically is a bunch of rich people who think we are going to be wisked away by a spaceship when the Earth blows up.
