dogs dig holes sometimes to keep cool, they will dig a hole and lay in it. and sometimes they will dig a hole and roll in the dirt to scratch themselves and sometimes to just play. you can place a small fence around your garden or get the underground fence that gives them a harmless shock when they go near it.

Unfortuately, dog's will dog for many reasons and it will be trial and error. Speaking from experince, the fence should be the last resort. The dog will look at the fence as an obstacle too its goal and dig somewhere else and will tear up another part of your yard.
Boredom is big. Lack of toys is big. If you give it treats and it runs outside or you don't see it eaten, they could be burying the treats for later. The summer heat also affects their behavior. So does a lack of exersize, they get anxious. They'll also get anxious and act outside their normal temperment if they sense stress in the house.
No easy answer. The poop in the whole does work for that hole. Spanking is over-rated and a swift pull on the chain and a strong no does just as much. If you have to spank, use an object like a magazine so it doesn't equate your hand as punishment.
If it were my dog, I would run it more and make sure their is a chew toy for it to play with so it doen't have to improvise.
Good Luck

Fill in the holes: Put charcoal in the hole. Then try refilling the holes with junk. Dogs quickly lose interest and pretty much stop digging. Fill the hole with whatever is at hand - dead leaves, sticks, pine needles, rocks or even dog feces. Fill the top 2 inches or so with dirt. The dog finds the stuff, gets discouraged and often quits digging. They seem to get the idea they'll never know where they'll find junk, and it's not worth the effort to dig only to find junk so they quit.

The reason why she is digging is because she probably smells something under the ground, IE. moles, grubs, groundhogs, etc., or she is trying to find a place to stay cool. One way that you can stop her from digging in that spot is to fill the hole with her poo, but that will stop her from digging in THAT spot, that will NOT stop her from digging in other spots. Another way is to put up a fence, or get some of that spray stuff that is suppose to keep animals away from certain areas. I hope this has helped. Good luck.

I had a dog who is just like yours. We found out that it was digging my rabbits I buried!!! (of course they're dead). Maybe something died somewhere around your garden and your dog is trying to look for it. But if you really want to stop it, either scold it or keep her or he busy with a toy, another playmate, or a walk every morning for it to forget the digging. Ooh!!! maybe you could also place a sand box (or soil box..) in your garden and hide little things that you dog can find! Sorry for adding so much "accent". I'm a very hyper person! :-) Take care little doggy!

when ever she does yell at her and give her a quick slap on the nose. how old is the dog? almost every dog digs its not abnormal... she may be trying to dig a hole for a bone she thinks she is going to put in it later on. just whenever u catch her doing it let her know its wrong.
if its just the garden you are worried about put up a fence or something so the dog doesnt get near the garden.

Put some small stones in a plastic bottle and when you see her digging tell her calmly but firmly to stop and if she ignores you shake the bottle quite hard a few times, this will attract her attention and she will eventually recognise the noise as something she should not be doing. This is good aid in dog behaviour training.

Dogs like to dig. give your dog her own special place to dig and she'll live your grass
area and garden area alone. How to give your
dog a special place to dig. Is show her something that she likes and let her see you burrie it up. She will look at you and then when you walk away she'll dig it up.! She will catch on. You might have to do the tactic a few times some dogs take longer to catch on than others! It's in their nature to dig!

Well, I've heard if you bury some of their excrement where they've been digging, that they will stop as they don't like coming across that little surprise. My father-in-law went through the work of laying down chicken wire and then putting sod above it, but I'm not sure how effective that was. You could try making sure she gets more exercise...maybe she does it when she's bored, but truly, I think dogs just like to dig!
