The CAG and TAG as a baby parrots will have dark grey to black eyes up until they are roughly 6 months of age when their eye color starts to lighten. By the time they reach a year, their eyes become a pale grey color. At about 1.5 to 2 yrs their eyes will turn a pale straw color. And lastly at about 3-4 years of age, they will have a light yellow iris. This is one way to be able to determine an estimate of how old a baby is when visiting bird stores. Grey's usually reach maturity at about 4-5 years of age.

My TAG has a full vocabulary and only turned one on April 4th. The breeder's wife specially picked her for me because she showed signs that she would probably be a good "talker". LOL, that was an understatement!!! She is a total chatter box!!!!

There is almost nothing she won't imitate!! Alarm clocks, whistles... she knows everyone in the house's names and hollers at the other birds to shut up!!! Something she hears frequently from my kids. Unfortunately, she has also learned some other words that I have been trying to break her of saying.

She whistles and calls the dog's name. Her first words were pretty bird.

She mimics my Macaw and now my Macaw is mimicking her!!!

Maya, my macaw does whisper and it blows people away when she does it. She is four years old and has a pretty significant vocabulary as well. And she knows exactly what she is saying!

They're my babies!!!!

Dave is RIGHT On about this. Most African birds 'follow' this color changing patterns.. from CAG to Senengals. :) Enjoy and Gee, never thought to teach any of mine "Do you want to whisper"? LOL Great one! Amazons are loud.. should practice that ASAP!! LOL

Also, realize that you are a lucky CAG owner as MANY Grey's learn to speak when they are about a year old. Most owners believe they know 'how' earlier, it's just that Grey's want to be 'perfect' when they say or make a specific noise.. that they just don't do it much til they get it RIGHT :) That's the spirit of a Grey.. we want perfect pitch and tone before we speak. They are kind of perfectionists LOL Grats on Buddy and enjoy him, sounds like HE will be a lot of fun :)
