You are not dooooooooomed as you state.
In any situation you have choices, and an opportunity to make the most out of a situation. If you and your friend are both able bodied you can walk.
It might be a long walk but you'll be accomplishing the following:
1. Getting to your destination
2. Having company to converse with along the way (your friend)
3. You'll get a great workout and improve your health
There are always alternative solutions to things.

Call a Taxi and act normal and not be acting stupid. When you get to your destination ask the driver what you owe. As he checks the meter, jump out and run! This happened to me a few times when I had a Taxi.
