Hey so I have 2 great danes, and they aren't trained or anything. So basically they wont obey me when it comes to shutting up. I was wodering what do you guys think of those collars that spray citronelle every time they bark. I thought it was mean at first, but it's driving every one in my house insane and so are the neighboors.

TO all you dog lovers, do you think its mean to use citronella bark collars?

The problem is that , they moved around with me. Where I used to live, it was very dangerous, and it was good that our dogs barked cause we would know that there was some one around or something.
Now we live in a surburbian house, and my dogs are age 8 and 9, and thats pretty old for great danes, they wont learn everything, I have tried to train them

May I say I did not Reject them, I loved them very much. They are very healthy and happy dogs. and when I lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, they were guard dogs, and barking was a very good thing. Now it's not and we ahve tried to teach them not to bark and it doesnt work.

Those collars do work...for some time until the dogs get used to the citronella smell and bark anyway!
It is not cruel to them...they just don't like the smell!

You must be the pack leader and obviously your dogs do not take you seriously. Teach your dogs the enough or no bark command. each time they bark say no bark and hold their muzzles shut with you hands. when they calm down release the muzzle say in good no bark repeat as needed. The no bark command needs to be said in a mean angry tome of voice. Enroll in a dog obedience class, this will help you get into the pack leader position

The guy at the Humane Society came out to my neighbor's the other day for a barking complaint. I asked him what you can do to make a dog not bark so much, and he said there really is no way to stop it.

supposed to be very effective but id much prefer the shock collar you need to get better control of these dogs get the shock collar with remote control these dogs are too big to be doing what they want you to become alpha male and make them respect you i love dogs but neighbors that dont are evil people nothing better that a neighbor feeding your dog a piece of antifreeze soaked steak over on your property get a trainer and get these dogs under controll

Why not take the time to train your dogs properly. If you are this irresponsible maybe you shouldn't have a dog, let alone two.

if your neighbors start complaining about the barking, you should tell them that "when they (referring to your neighbors) stop whining and bickering about their (the dogs) bark maybe the dogs will model them and stop barking".

You can also ask them to be silent all day to see how it feels not to be able to express themselves.
