I would be interested to know what the Ayurvedic treatment for vitiligo would be. Since vitiligo is an immune system disorder I would assume that the treatment would be strengthening the immune system with herbal remedies. Also, from my understanding a certain diet should be followed that excludes citrus and high acid foods, sodas-etc.(anything with dyes and artificial flavourings in it), little dairy but a bit is allowed and lots of fruits (low-acid) and vegetables AND no meat.
Possibly something with the treatment is not quite right as there should be a response (improvement) by 9 months in. If the Ayurvedic treatment has been for a duration of 6-7 months or less, perhaps it hasn't had the time to work. After all your brother had this problem for 5 years, it'll take a while to get better.
Tell him about the diet.

The book I am reading about yeast infections indicate that yeast (Candida) can play a part in vitiligo.
For basic information on the systemic yeast syndrome, check out the link on the Welcome page of www.hufa.org.

I think the asker wants an answer better than just old age...That's a great question. Why does hair stop showing the pigment in old age or any other time?

The cause is unknown except in cases like Micheal Jackson. Cosmetic coverage is only treatment.

There is no known cause although some postulate an autoimmune cause - there is no good "cure" for it although a good dermatologist can help to try to repigment some of the skin.
