LCOS is a liquid-crystal technology. The liquid crystal layer is laid over an etched silicon surface, hence the name Liquid Crystal On Silicon. In ordinary LCD, light is passed through the liquid crystal layer from back to front. In LCOS, light comes from the front, reflects at the silcon layer and comes back out the front. There are many advantages to this technology, most stemming from the fact that the double-pass of light means the liquid crystal layer is thinner than the ordinary transmissive LCD.
