These are both excellent choices of dogs. Both are smart, well mannered (after some basic training, of course) loyal, and cute. I would think that the Border Collie would need more activity than a Golden Retriever, so you'd have to consider that aspect. Border Collies are bred to work and exercise, so think about if that lifestyle fits yours. Goldens also need exercise, of course, but not nearly as much as a B.C.
Try these websites for more info on the dog breeds you want to know about. Good luck. PS Make sure you get your dog from a reputable breeder, or call the shelter and see if they have a Golden or BC available for adoption!

Collie is the way to go. If you get one as a puppy, it can have no proper training and still be a great do just by the way you raise it. Most dogs are only mean because the are trained that way or grow up in a house with no training that doesn't correct them when they are wrong. So if you just treat the dog well and correct it when it does something wrong it will be a perfectly good pet for little kids through adults.
Collies are active dogs but, they calm down once they see that you don't wan to play at that time. It doesn't take very long, it only take a minute or less. Collies are likely to invent their own games when you don't want to play. for instens our Collie figured out how to bounce a ball away to play fetch with herself.
Also, Collies are less likely to run away. Once a Collie knows its territory it stays there and doesn't like to leave. But, if you move you Collie will quickly adapt and find its new territory.

While they are both beautiful dogs, I would go with the Golden Retriever. Border Collies can be high-strung and are infamous for nipping; they don't get along too well with young children. Both dogs need lots of exercise to burn off that excess energy, but Border Collies need specific tasks, as they are working dogs (natural herders).

I have to go with goldens. Though border collies can be lots of fun. you did not say if you have children or not. Goldens are great with everyone, and love to be petted even by kids. Borders are a little more energized, so yu need to think about your situation and what fits your lifestyle

They are both good dogs, but if you get a Border Collie I hope that you have the energy to keep up with it. Border Collies are herding animals, and they have lots and lots of energy to burn. Very active dogs. This energy helps in agility, fly ball, tracking, Frisbee. Golden's are a more mellow dog. They do like to do all of the above, but they are not so one tracked minded, and obsessed, and intense. I hope this helps Good luck

I would have to say definitely the Golden Retriever. Border collies can be a bit tempermental but a Golden is your friend for life. They love to play and are great with children.
Just a note regarding Golden's. They LOVE water and due to their long fur (unless you get them groomed in the summer), they will dig to find a cool spot. My solution to the digging was I bought one of the larger plastic kiddie pools. They love it (I have 2 Goldens).

both can be agressive if not trained correctly.....one of the worst attacks i heard of was from a retriever. However if you have kids or are thinking of having kids in the future i would always choose the retriever over the collie. Obedience training and socialisation at an early age will make it a gr8 dog!

Border Collies are a wee bit more high maintenance. I have 2 goldens and they are amazingly smart as far as dogs go. One has figured out how to catch gophers!
