The way that works. I myself just picked a day - smoked my head off the day before and then did not smoke again. It was not too bad after the first few weeks. But other people have had good luck with tapering or with the patch or what ever. The thing is to keep trying if one way does not do it try another. And do not let one slip send you back into smoking all the time. Just keep working and you will find the way that works for you.

just stop completely, dont build it up in your head or anything just dont think about it.
its just down to the individual, if you want to quit enough you will be able to- i personally think that all the nicotine replacements just prolong it untill you give in again.
also i found that if you tell lots of people you have quit then there is more pressure on you not to smoke again as youll let everyone down, or prove them right that your not strong enough.
take it each day at a time and dont have that panic like omg, i will never smoke another cigarette in my whole life.
if you hang around with people who smoke make it clear to them your quiting and not to give you any of theirs when you have a momentary relapse.
also try not to drink if you do for a bit because an environment like a pub when ur relaxed and surrounded by smokers is when you'll be most tempted.
o yeh count how long it is since u quit and wenever tempted remind yourself how well youve done.
it is hard but not impossible, dont give in.
goodluck.

it takes a couple of times of quitting before u actually quit. First question u have to ask urself; do u really like it? it so, u will have a harder time quitting. Secondly, why do u want to quit. Depending on ur answer and the severity it would have if u continue (ie shortness of breathe) is also a factor. Use these factors as motivation to help u to say no to smoke.

Different things work at different times. I did cold turkey this last time and I'm coming up on 5 years. I chose a quit date and had to mentally prepared myself for many months. When the date came, I kept my resolve.
It was a little hard, but with concentration and focus on why I wanted to quit, I got over the heebie jeebies and it settled down eventually.
I've quit 5 times in my life, and twice before for at least 5 years. But I think this time is the one that will stick.
Once I tried hypnotism but it only stuck for a year - I wasn't really ready then I guess.
Good luck on your plan!

The gum and the patches seem to work for some. I am a non-smoker, however if I were, it seems that looking at a month's or years' worth of cigarette purchase receipts would do it for me.
Additionally, another motivator may be to visit your local VA hospital nursing home. They are generally full of veterans who've smoked their entire lives and are reaping the wages of that life. Very gruesome to look at and listen to.

Suffering a massive heart attack or a stroke is usually effective. Getting diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer is also fairly effective.
Other than that, if you would prefer to avoid these failsafe methods, I would suggest cold turkey alone or in combination with gum, patch, etc.
Point is, if you do not want to quit, you won't
If you decide that you do not want to become a statistic then you will quit.

I just had this mental picture of myself in 30 years time, a fat wrinkled old bag with a ciggy dangling out of her mouth, coughing up her lungs every morning. Everytime I wanted a cigarette I forced myself to think of this image, and it worked like magic.
