A lot of time it's a religious requirement.
Also, many dads want their son to be circumcised if they themselves are.
My sons have different dads. One son is circumcised, and the other isn't - because one dad was and the other wasn't.
If it was totally up to me, I'd go with uncircumcised. It's been shown that if the male keeps himself clean, there is no reason for circumcision, which is mutilation in my opinion.

We really grappled with this question when we found out we were pregnant with our first boy. We have no religious reason to do it so it left us with health, psychological well-being (specifically the locker room issue) and looking like Daddy. Here is what we learned and how we decided:
Health is no real issue, there is no evidence on any more infections in or from uncircumcised over circumcised and there is conflicting evidence that uncircumcised penises are less likely to get certain cancers. It is nothing to retract the skin to wash in the shower and the natural normal body of any animal including humans does not need surgical intervention to work.
Daddy is circumcised but they will have different eye color, or hair color, or face shapes so it isn't damaging that the boy's penis may look differently than Dad's.
More and more parents are choosing not to circumcise so he won't be alone in the locker room.
Knowing all this it came down to what we wanted for him, we decided that it wasn't fair for us to do that to him. They rarely use any pain relief for babies in the hospital and he could never choose not to be circumcised. We decided not to circumcise either of our boys because they could always CHOOSE to be circumcised later (and with pain relief) in their lives. My husband and I pride ourselves on making that decision as the first sign of respect for the men that our boys will become and their right to choose the path their life takes. That is the way we see it and how we decided.

I guess from looking at the pictures on WIKIPEDIA I have a "circumsized" one and I think it has done well for me up to this point of being 29, now I do not know if there are any future drawbacks or not... I do not also know if the info on wikipedia is correct, I heard that there were HACKS messing with the site, or just other jokers and clowns changing definitions(that would be tragic if the definitions got messed up and man started to do the less desireable one~ you can think about this with any issue really you know like the DEFINITION of marriage etc etc )... now it is strange to think that man has to think about this... you would think that there would be a GENERAL consensus amoung man kind in general as to whether or not it is the right direction or not, as far as form and function and sleekness in design goes, I can not complain really about the style I have.(from a urinary or sexual standpoint)

I agree completely with Tyla. Why do parents continue choose to mutilate their own child's genitals?
Well, honestly I know why: Ignorance. They don't know any better.
I am an adult male, uncricumcised, and happier for it. I suffered no locker-room horror stories. And I can't imagine sex after being mutilated. You do realize that when you circumcise a boy, you are turning an internal organ into an external one, right? The head of the penis goes from a soft, sensitive internal organ to a more dry, tough, less sensitive external organ. There is less feeling in the head of the penis, therefor sex is not as good. I know that as a baby grows inside you you aren't thinking about him having sex when he's older, but take it into consideration before you lob off part of his penis.

I've learned in my college Human Sexuality classes that circumcising your child actually leads to more health issues than not circumcising them. Polls show even most doctors think that there is some huge health risk in not doing it, but the fact of the matter is, other than a minor (very very very minor percentage wise) increase in the liklihood of Urinary Tract Infections when the child is still in diapers, there is 0 health risk. On the other hand, a circumcised sexually active adult is at higher risk for injury, infection, and chaffing.
Also, you are taking away your child's right to chose. Who cares about freedom when it comes to mutilating your child's genitals right?
Any properly informed mother would never allow her son's genitals to be mutilated.
Below is a photo of a baby in a MODERN "harness" that they use to strap down boys when they cut them. He is still strapped in while the pain subsides. Their little bodies are too weak to take pain killers, so they are left to suffer. Mothers choose this for their babies?

Ok, to do or not to do that is the question...lol Well both my sons were, and they never had any problems. It is easier for the child to keep clean. Another member of the family was not, and had to later be circumsized due to complications of diabetes. It was alot more painful at his age 24, than that of a newborn. He had to take numerous days off of work, He was certainly more embarrased, He had a longer recovery time.(no pun intended) P.S. The same person stated that there is definately more sensitivity during sex.

It's a choice made between parents.
It depends on their views- was dad circ'd? What was their experience?
Many people have differing views on this- a lot of people see circ as mutilation.
There is no right or wrong answer, no list of things that can be checked off to decide whether or not to do it.
Sorry there is not a more clear answer.

Parents usually make their decisions either based on 1) religous beliefs, or 2) culture and family tradition, superstitions & misinformation or they 3) become informed and research things.

My reasons were: it says to in the Old Testimate(I am a Christian)
I heard horror stories of men who weren't
And I was told that if something becomes
a problem in the future, the older a man is the harder it is to heal from this.
This is purely a personal choice.

I have 4 boys and chose to have them all circumcised at birth...one reason being cleanliness...it's not as clean and once they become sexually active it's even a little painful if they have never properly retracted the foreskin...besides you don't want them choosing to do it later in life..it's much more painful then.
