Yes. There are many.
Try to hook up with others researching your family, you may not know them. Go to Yahoo Search, type in " Family" (i.e. SMITH FAMILY). This will bring up a list of sites where other people are researching your family name! They may have done much of the work for you.
The LDS site is free! They have the most extensive family history of all, and most dependable.
Your question has many answers also. If you know you have ancestors from the Civil war, go to the CWSS site. If you know you have ancestors that came over through Ellis Island, go to that site. That is cool, gives ships, manifests, passengers traveling with, really good information - also where they originated (sailed from).
Some sites allow you to build a Genealogy tree on their site. The more you contribute, the more they let you research - kind of a tit-for-tat situation.

I think it's www.familsearch.com. It is the Mormon website. They have the greatest collection of history in the U.S. Also try your local courthouses where your family is from.
