You have to be carefull to ensure you are on the right SHELTON tree. Sometimes things like Coat of Arms are just commercials. Best way, is to research and prove your origins. One of these sites mentions the DNA project. That is a absolute proof of your lineage, it does not prove which generation you link into, but that a branch of your ancestors ties to a branch of someone's. These tests usually use the MALE SIR name branches only.

From looking at these sites, English. From a surname which was originally derived from a place name meaning "shelf town" in Old English.

Shelton: England, Nottinghamshire, Bedsfordshire, Norfolkshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire. Habitational surname meaning an enclosure on a cliff or shelf from Old English scylf(shelf) + tun(enclosure, settlement). Shilton and Skelton are from the same name.
