We have a layover on Friday night from 4pm until midinght at LAX.
With traffic and time being a factor- what is the best way to spend some time in LA near(ish) the airport?

Wow, a few years ago 8 hours lay over would be fun. Many things to do near LAX.
But now I would not leave the secure part of airport. Who want to spend hours, possible standing in line just to get back in side.
Take a couple of good books. Eat a meal, you do not say way airline, but some terminals have nice restaurants, spend some time relaxing and eating.
Take a lap top watch a couple of DVD/s.
Pay the one time use fee go into one of the airlines (member only lounges)
Keep in mind by time you actually get off plane, you may waste Half hour or better. Allow 2/3 hours to get back in side of airport if you leave. So your left with 4 hours

airport security is not that bad, i just came back from LAX to MIA last night; it took me a half hour to get through all the checkpoints. That was American Airlines though, they have there own terminal and things typically move fast there. But I definitely would not stay in LAX for 8 HOURS!!

Whew! And I thought my 2 hour layover was bad enough. I would try to do a little sight seeing in the area including a good place to get some food. That airport food will kill you. Good luck!

Take the Blue van..Super Shuttle from the airport to Hollywood and see the sights on Hollywood Blvd. see Grumman's Chinese Theater etc... it's only 1/2 hour away from the airport.. maybe 12-15 miles...

It's worth your while...says.. "O" Wise One

It's a no-brainer. With all the airport security problems and criminal activities, the Correct answer is for you to spend all of that time at security/police area.

There's a outdoor mall nearby. You can go eat or shopping. Or just relax in the sun. Have fun!

once you arrive on the terminal, take the Flyaway go back and forth to Downtown l. a. (ascertain you get on the single which announces "union station") for $4. It takes you on to downtown. you could walk around the area, take the subway to Hollywood, etc.
