First you will have to get permission from the local historical board they will tell you what can and can't be done on your addition. They have some really screwed up rules so be ready. I'm in the process of finishing up a remodel on one right now the first contractor messed up big time and now having to replace vinyl windows with wooden ones...go figure

It all depends on what district you're in, what type of addition, what your local planning laws are etc.

The only way you'll know is to get in touch with your local planning department and submit plans to them or have them come out and inspect the site.

Such decisions are usually made on an individual basis. In general, if the addition isn't going to have a visual impact or be detrimental in other ways then there's a good chance you'll get permission to build (unless there's a blanket ban in place).

You probably can but you will have to have your plans approved by the historical society and city hall. You must use colors of that period, etc. It's not hard to get permission, you just must have a clear view of what you are going to build, submit your plans and don't change them once approved.

It depends on the municipality. They may tell you how to do the addition, what colors, style, etc. Or they may have no problem. Or if you're house is designated a historical site, you generally can't expand. Contact your local zoning board.

You will have to check out the building code for your area, and any addition to a home requires a building permit as long as it attached. Detached doesn't require a building permit.

You'll need a building permit regardless. Take a rough draft of what you have in mind to the zoning dep't, they will let you know whether or not it's allowed in your district and also what permits and inspections will be required.

You need to check your cities building codes. It is different from city, to city. Some places around here you can't do anything without a permit, IF you can do anything at all, go to the next county, and ANYTHING goes, no permit required. good luck!
