it is a 70s model with a v-8 engine, but i do not know the engine size

Generally you won't. The numbers that you are looking for are usualy on the frame, more so for the heavy duty trucks. However you might be able to find them in a couple of other places. One being on the underside of the passenger fender, a second location would be on the transmission itself. However this only applies as long as the tranny has never been swapped.
As for your engine itself, chances are that it is a 360 inline six. It is a common mistake that bigger vehicles require bigger motors. In this case you want high torque, not high horse power.

look it up on another website, there should be plenty of sites that will identify it for you....just type F 500 and the year into a search engine see what comes up.
