Children learn how to behave partly by trial and error, they do something and wath how you react. And partly by what is being modelled for them, the little tykes are great at understanding boundries in many given social situations and since they're generally egocentric until they are ay least six, they do what benifits them.
If being good at the neighbours house generates lots of praise/sweets then they do it.
Also, since they have yet to create a complete model of how the neighbours will interact with them, they will err on the side of caution.

because they want you to go nuts, like you are living in 2 different worlds with 2 different sets of children. They turn on the "nice switch" when the company comes around and just when you think you've got a good thing going - the turn on the "evil switch"

I wish that were the case. I have always found the opposite. My friends all think my kids are monsters.

they are sly little things. They want people to trust them and give them sweets. But on a serious note, it could be because they don't know the newcomer, so they don't feel comfortable around them. With time, they get used to them and behave more naturally

They do NOT!!!!!!!! Your own are like that? Wow! I've been to houses where I had to make the kids be quiet so I could hear myself think ... their parents just looked on indulgently thinking, aw, the little darlings.
I'm childfree by choice, honey.

They know your tolerance levels and how to exploit them but have yet to measure that of their visitors. The more the same people visit the more chances they will take! (unless they bear gifts all the time)
