I can't go to sleep at night and I think it's bothering my head. I have tried counting back from 100 and I'm only 11. I can't take drugs. Thanks.

There can be many reasons why a person cannot fall asleep. Usually this is due to increased brain activity (you are thinking about things or worrying about them). If you read in bed stop. If you watch TV in bed stop. Doing these things can convince your mind and body that it is not time for sleep. Do your best to clear your mind and think of nothing when it is time to go to sleep. If you drink sodas at night this can cause you to stay awake because of the caffeine. Be sure to get plenty of exercise during the day. This sets up your body to be tired when it comes time to fall asleep. Also talk with your parents and let them know you have problems falling asleep.

When I can't go to sleep it's usually because I have something on my mind that I am thinking really hard about and it just gets stuck there and I can't stop thinking about it. When that happens to me instead of going to bed I put my alarm clock by the couch and lay down and find a movie that's not really all that good and start to watch it. That is usually enough to get my mind off what's bothering me and let's me drift off to sleep.

Get plenty of exercise during the day. Take time at night before bed to "wind down" from your day. A nice bath before bedtime but not too close to that time because it will stimulate you some.

Learn some relaxation techniques like relaxing your muscles one at a time. Maybe do some reading before bed.

Good luck.

When you grow up and get a job don't work shift work. I am currently making the transition from midnights to days - I've slept maybe six hours in the last three nights.

When I was younger I had problems getting to sleep too. I learned to clear my mind and not allow myself to think much. Don't worry about it is the important thing, the more you stress about it, the harder it will be. See a doctor if this persists. Good luck!

Try to telling your mom and then go to the docter and the docter will probably give you a medicine that makes you go to sleep. Everytime I couldn't go to sleep I would look at something for a long time without blinking and it would make me sleepy.

Try eating carbohydrate rich foods. Carbohydrates aid in serontonin release. High levels of serontonin induce sleep. You can also play relaxing music.
